Possession play and quick break attacks in a 7 v 7 game. (35 mins)

Objective:

To regain possession and play beyond the press into the attacking phase (speed endurance/ aerobic capacity).

Description:

In a 60 x 45 yard area we position 5 mannequins on the halfway line and play 6 v 6 (+2 neutral GKs). The practice starts with a goalkeeper and a 5 v 5 situation in zone 1. There is 1 forward for each team in zone 2.

The team in possession (reds in the diagram) must complete a set number of passes within zone 1 before playing to the forward in the other half - the intensity of the practice is influenced by the number of passes required. All of the reds then move into zone 2 to make supporting runs and attack the goal. The Blue defenders follow the attackers (track them) to defend the goal.

If the blues win the ball in zone 1 they immediately try and play to their forward, all make supporting tuns, and attack the goal. The red players follow the blues (track them) to defend the goal.

Coaching points:

1. The emphasis is initially on creating space and keeping good possession, then moves to quick support play.

2. Ensure a full press from the defending team to raise the intensity of the game.

3. Quick forward passing is needed in the transition. Switch play in the final third, looking to move the opposition.
