Shooting - Technical session (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Technical practice for shooting
  • Final 3rd exercise
  • U7s training minimal standing around, keep the ball moving.
  • Warm up exercises to take place before practice to start.
  • Plenty of balls needed
  • Coaching position at the side to observe (coach can change side)
  • 15 minutes

Organisation

  • 4 reds to stand on Yellow cones
  • 4 blues to stand on green cones (the space between the cone is 10 yards)
  • The reds start with the ball on the yellow cones and they take a standing strike on the ball towards the blue on the green cones.
  • The exercise similar to a passing exercise but the coach introduces the mechanics of shooting.
  • The red players aim is to strike the ball to the blue players with as much accuracy as possible
  • The Blue players will attempt to control the ball, (Coach will go through mechanics of control, and observe) this isn't the nature of the session however this can be introduced
  • The blue player then strikes the ball back to the red player who controls the ball, and continues to do this.

Progression based on observations.

-Coach may ask players to strike the ball across the floor, or in the air.

-Players to keep count how many accurate passes they make.

-Coach can increase distance from yellow cone to green cone when players are accurately striking the ball to each other.

Further Progression exercise.

Striking the ball with accuracy to knock the ball off the cone in the middle.

  • Now the players are used to striking the ball, a ball is to be placed on the white cone 5 yards away from each player
  • Starting with the reds, the players strike the ball with the aim to knock off the ball on the white cone in the middle.
  • After the red players turn the blue player has a go.
  • The opposite player will be ready to control the ball. The player striking the ball will reset the ball on the cone if they are successful
Progression

-Coach makes the distance of the cones longer.

Mechanics - Shooting.

1. Get your body in a position to strike

 2. Angled approach
3. Non-kicking foot beside the ball
4. Head over the ball

5. Select Surface & Strike: E.g. Laces, Inside.

6. Follow Through

7. Accuracy (and aim)

Shooting - Skill session (opposed) (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Skill practice introducing striking the ball on the move and opposition
  • Running and shooting
  • Striking with a defender.
  • Cones and goals already set.
  • Spare balls.
  • 2 groups of 4 to keep the ball moving and increase shots per player.
  • 15 minutes

Organisation

  • Break out into the two zones.
  • Use the goals at the side of the pitch with the blue and red cone set up.
  • Both zones to do the same activity and progress together (picture showing both exercises).
  • In both zones 2 blue players and 2 red players line up behind each other with a ball each.
  • The player at the front on the line runs with the ball towards a gate in their zone (red or blue gate)
  • When the player runs through the gate they are to shoot at goal.
  • The players are encouraged to shoot on the move and not stop when they go through the gate.
  • The player will retrieve their ball and move outwards for the next player in the line to go.
  • Players are to keep count of how many goals they have scored.

Progression based on observations.

- Coach may notice players are favouring one set of gates so may call, or appoint a captain to call the colour of the gate to run through.

- Left foot , right foot. The coach may challenge the players to use their right foot and then next go change to the left foot, giving the player a decision to make, as to which gate is best to run through.

- The coach may bring one of the players to be a feeder of the ball. the players then pass to the feeder and the feeder makes the decision of which gate the player is going through by passing back to the player to the left or the right.

Progression exercise - Opposition

As seen in area 2, the activity progresses by adding a defender prompting the attacker to shoot quicker.

  • For this activity the blue team will start in the corner on the pitch with the balls.
  • The red team will start on the red matt ready to receive the ball from the blue team.
  • The first blue player will pass the ball to the red player and then run into the pitch to become a defender.
  • The red players receive the ball and run through a gate as before and shoots before the defender can tackle them. The cones will be closer to the attacker for this exercise.
  • The Blue team will try and block the shot.
  • Once the play has ended, the red player (shooter) will collect the ball and go into the corner to become the defender. The blue player will line up on the red disc.
  • The next players will then go and do the same activity.
  • This will take place in 2 groups of four to keep the ball moving.
Progression based on observations.

- Coach may move the gates closer to the defenders to make the shooter have less time to make decisions.
- The passer can dictate the colour of the gate the shooter has to run through by shouting the colour when they pass.- Numbers game. The coach can number the players 1 and 2 for both teams and then call a number or both numbers to participate keeping the players on their toes. - The coach could then merge both groups so it is 4 x 4. Using the whole of the pitch still with two goals and putting the red matt in the centre of the pitch. The coach can then call 1,2,3 or all 4 numbers with the shooters trying to score in one of the goals, moving into a small sided game element of the practice

Shooting - Small Sided Game (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Small sided game - Repetition
  • 4 vs 4 no GKs
  • Under 7s Pitch guidelines small sided game  28 x20 yards
  • 10 minutes.

Organisation

  • Balls around the pitch to keep game flowing.
  • All inner cones apart from pitch layout cones removed.
  • Side goals move to end of the pitch making 4 goals to shoot at.
  • Blues vs Reds, match as normal but with 4 goals to increase shooting and players confidence by scoring more often.

Progression

Add zones to shoot in to increase the points that can be awarded.

Player scores in red attacking red zone 1 point

Player scores in attacking green zone 2 points

Player scores in attacking blue zone 3 points

Goals galore. If the game is becoming a goal heavy game for one team remove one of the goals, do the same for both teams if goals are being scored by both teams.

Are the mechanics of shooting being used?

Coach to remind players that this is a match environment and passing and dribbling are important to create the space to Shoot!
