Recovery Game (15 mins)

Set Up:

Quarter field - OSC set up. Two large goals. Two cones15 yards from goal on each end line (from both goals).

Players:

Three teams of 5 players. 6v6 on the field with GKs. Two teams work; one team rests. Rotate every 3 minutes.

Description:

Normal game - regular rules. Only condition is as the ball goes to the GK, two of the red team must run into the end zone marked by the cones on the touchlines. As the GK transitions the ball, blue look to attack with at least a possibe 4v3, creating an overload where the defending team are outnumbered.

Key Factors:

1. Delay - slow down the attack if the ball cannot be won.

2. Defend central areas.

3. Dropping defenders need to be ball side/goal side (form narrow triangle with ball).

4. Speed and angles of approach - espeically for recovering defenders.

5. Communication.

Progression: remove conditions and play a regular game.

Questions:

Can the delay defenders force a wide pass in front of them amongst the attackers?

Can the ball be won? If not, now what?

What if the point of the attack is changed, how does this affect the recovery runs?

3v2 Defending (15 mins)

Set Up:

15*30 grid. Two different colored pinnies. Balls with servers on the sides. One small gate set up on each end line. Markers set up 5 yards from each end line.

Players:

Four players on each end line. Can adjust numbers where needed.

Description:

Each group of players is numbered 1-4. Server will call out two numbers and the players from each team with those numbers compete 2v2. Each server can support the team of their color when in possession (creating a 3v2). Defenders can win the ball and attack the opponent's goal. Servers must remain on the outside.

Key Factors:

1. Nearest defender to the ball pressures as the ball travels to the attacker.

2. Speed and angle of approach of the first defender. Show inside where cover is.

3. Slow down and show restraint.

4. Covering player - proper angle and distance. Play off the first defender's shoulder.

5. Communication between defenders.

6. Proper cues to press - bad touch, bad pass, negative play, attacker facing own goal, etc.

Progression:

Both servers become active by supporting the team in possession (4v2). Allow for 1-2 touches.

Questions:

1. Where do we force the attacker?

2. What happens when the ball switches attackers?

3. What happens when the attackers choose to run with the ball?

3v2 Shooting Lanes (15 mins)

Set Up: 45*15 grids. Larger grid split into three smaller grids. One large goal at either end.

Players: One goalkeeper in each goal. Divide remaining players into two groups of 8. One group beside each of the goals. Attackers group divides into threes. Defenders divide into pairs.

Description: Two defenders to be placed in each attacking zone and central zone. Activity starts with the attackers at the furthest end from the goal. Attackers work around the circuit, combining for 3v2 against defenders who are restricted to their zones. Attackers work to get an attempt on goal. If the defenders win the ball, they can score by counter attacking and running the ball over the end line where the attack started. Rotate groups halfway through the activity.

Progression:

1. Allow one defender to enter into the front/middle grid (making 3v3).

2. Attackers attempt to score before engaging the third and fourth defenders.

Key Factors:

1. Nearest defender pressures the ball. Arrive as the ball arrives. Delay.

2. Second defender offers proper support - angle/distance. Play off the shoulder of the first defender.

3. Cues to press: bad touch, bad pass, facing own goal, etc.

4. Communication.

5. Show restraint - don't dive in! Wait for mistakes.

Queen's Court (15 mins)

Set Up: Quarter field at Pine Glen. Balls along the outside.

Players: 3 teams of 5 players (one team will have a subsitute). 5 outfield and 1 goalkeeper for each team on field. Two active teams; third team rests.

Description: Play 6v6 (including GK) - King's / Queen's court. All regular rules apply, including retreat line. Team that scores stays and quickly attacks the other way (after scoring). Resting team jumps on the field to defend. Team that got scored on leaves the field.

Key Factors:

All coaching points from the previous session - focus on delay and support. Look for players to get in behind the ball and make the right decision as to when to press and when not to press.
