This session is designed to imrpove the following:
1. 1v1 defending.
2. Group defending.
3. Attacking transitions.

Organization:
- Set up as two 6x10 yard area as shown.
- Red, yellow, orange and blue cones.
Instructions:
- Players are divided into two groups.They are then paired up in two's to work together on basic defending footwork / movements for 6 seconds.
- Exercise start with pairs starting on the yellow cone facing each other, the coach then call out a cone i.e red, blue, orange, yellow e.t.c. Players then have to react and move their feet quickly by shifting laterally from one cone to the other.
- The cones are rearranged in zig-zag or in a diamond shape to allow the players to move laterally, diagonally i.e. forward and backwards.
- Short sprints are gradually incorporated into the exercise.
Coaching Points/Questions:
- Stay low and keep your head forward.
- Tuck in your knees.
- Shift quickly by pushing your knees to right or left.
- Turn and shift quickly.

Organization:
Set up as shown.
Instructions:
- The players are divided into two groups as shown, each group is then divided into three teams i.e reds, yellows and blues.
- Two attacking teams are placed at each end of the grid with the defending team starting in the middle. One attacking team starts with the ball passing back and forth with each player taking two touches and trying to stay in possession for a minimum of of 2-3 seconds before passing back to the team mate. This will allow the defending team to work on their movements and simple basics of pressure and cover.
- Once the attacking team in possession makes 6 passes, they quickly pass the ball to the other attacking team at the other end of the area. The attacking team that passes the ball into the other end now apply immediate pressure on the ball to immitate pressure and cover tactics, while the defending team now replaces the attacking team.

- Defending Principles: Pressure and Cover.
- Angle and speed of approach.
- Force play into one direction i.e. outside / inside.
- Be able to see the opponent and the ball.
- Correct distances between defending players.
- Don't dive in.
- Communication.

Instructions:
- Same as before as the previous activity but it now progresses to a 3v3 and 4v4.

- Angle and speed of approach.
- Force play into one direction i.e. outside / inside.
- Be able to see the opponent and the ball.
- Correct distances between defending players.
- Don't dive in.

Organization:
Set up as shown.
Instructions:
- 2v2 and 3v3.
- Three teams of four i.e. reds, blues and yellows.
- Yellows starts as the attacking team while reds and blues are the defending teams.
- Reds defend one goal while blues defend the other goal.
- Coach serves the ball into the attacking team (yellows) to start off the practice, the attacking team needs to make at least one pass before they can shoot on goal. If yellows score they quickly turn around to attack the other goal that the blues are defending. If defending team reds or blues wins possession they counter attack quickly to score on the other goal while the yellows transition quickly to defend the goal.
- Once a goal is scored by a defending team or the ball goes out of play, a new set of yellow attackers come in to attack the opposite goal of the direction of the last attack.
- Attacking team are given 5 opportunites to attack before switching roles with one of the defending teams on coach's call.
- All the teams attack and defend during the exercise, the team that concedes the least goals wins.

- Transition quickly to attack / counter attack upon winning possession.
Progressions:
- Attacking team can finish on goal first time upon receiving the pass from the coach.
- Two attacking teams are placed on the end line and start with the ball on every attack. Defending team are placed in the middle and are constantly turning around to defend the waves of attack and they are defending both goals.

- Blues set up in a 1-3-1-1 formation.
- Reds set up in a 1-2-1-2 formation.
- Free play with no restriction.
- Normal FIFA laws of the game applies.

Area:
10 yards x 10 yards.
Organization:
- 2 playing areas are set up.
- 3 v 1 transitional keepaway.
- The attacking team have to keep the ball away from the defender.
- Upon winning the ball, the defender have to try and pass the ball back quickly into his grid.
- Upon playing the ball across, 1 player from the team that was in possession now move across to win the ball back as they are now the defending team.
Progression:
- Completion of 5 successive passes equals to a point.
- Defending team can send a second defender in when attacking team completes 5 passes.
Coaching points:
- Quick transitioning from attacking to defending and vice-versa
- Quality and weight of pass.
- Angles and distance of support.
- Quick pressing to win the ball back when defending.
- Quick pressing from team who lost ball to stop ball going forward.
- Speed of movement to support the player on the ball.
