General practice, creating overloads (20 mins)

Organisation

  • 10v10+4 possession based scenario, with the 2 floating players playing on the team in possession.
  • The 2 GK's act as bounce players for both sides.
  • 2 players for each team will be on the outside of the yellow pitch to be wide outlets. They can move anywhere on the outside.
  • 3 reds and 3 blues that are in the central box are not restricted to this area but to score a point there must be any 3 players in the square when the ball hits the GK. (Players can rotate)
  • At least one floating player must stay inside the red square at all times to create an overload for the team in possession. The other floating player can move anywhere across the whole pitch to help create an overload.
  • The idea of the exercise is for the team in possession of the ball to work the ball from one end to the other, but the ball must travel through the inside square before it can be worked to the other side.

Point scoring

  • A point will be scored for the team when they successfully get the ball from one end to the other via the square in the middle

Coaching points
  • Make use of the two floating players to create overloads and 2v1 situations in order to score a point by making the switch
  • Movement off the ball is vital in order to create space for teammates
  • The team in possession look to isolate the defender by making a 2v1 situation
  • Players on end zones encouraged to move across the zone to receive the pass
  • Players inside the square to work together and make timed runs (one go short, one go wide/decoy runs)
  • Floating players look to interchange with each other to cause confusion for the team out of possession

Challenges/targets

  • Can a team switch the ball from one end to the other with every player touching it without the opposition winning possession?
Time
  • 3x5 minute blocks
  • In the second and third block, encourage players to interchange with players in the square and the end players after they have played a pass into them

SSG (30 mins)

Organisation

  • 11v11 on 3/4 pitch focusing on combining in the middle third to progress up the pitch.
  • Defending team (reds) will start as passive and just focus on staying in shape.

Ball 1:

- GK for the defending team will take a long goal kick to opposition CB. On CB first touch, defending team react to get into defensive shape.

Ball 2:

- CB for defending team will switch the ball to opposition full back. On FB first touch, defensive team react to get in shape/press.

Ball 3:

- In possession team will start from their GK.

Conditions

  • Defending team must attempt a shot at goal within 8 seconds of winning the ball back.
  • Players encouraged no more than 3 touches to keep the ball moving quickly.

Challenges
  • Can the defending team win the ball back within 10 seconds after pressing quickly?
  • Can the attacking team score from creating an overload in a wide area and also through a central area?

Coaching points

  • Body shape when receiving the ball
  • Play the ball to a teammate to try and tease the defender away to create space
  • Make decoy runs
  • Interchange with teammates
  • Ball speed, quality on the pass
  • Commit the opponent

Opposition coaching points

  • Ask them to defend/press differently at the start of the next block to give us some different problems to deal with
  • Protect the central areas
  • Leave the furthest player

Time
  • 6x4 minute blocks.
