Defensive Phase of Play - (7 vs 6)

Play starts by goalkeeper passing the ball to the coach/server. Central backs and the team in blue defending will try to find the coach in the circle at the middle of the field. Red team must organize, and attack on goal.

Coach the back four and two holding players informing them to be patient and read cues from the offensive team. Be aware of a bad first touch, short or slow pass, and read long passes by dropping the line if there is no pressure on the ball.

Note: Have the defending team start up by the poles (35 yards out), in order to coach marking the depth or balls over top.

Progression 1. Limit the attackers touches to three only. Progress to unlimited once their success rate is stifled by the defensive unit.

Progression 2. Install an offside line approximately 25-35 yards from goal depending on spacing. Utilize the offside line to teach the defensive team how to manage the space behind them by closing or holding that space depending on pressure that is or is not applied to the offensive ball carrier.
