Description

The aim of this session is to give the attacker a better understanding of why/when and where we need to take smaller and larger touches of the ball. Players also need to grow a better understanding of when and when not we should be performing skills 1v1 on the field, i.e. on the edge of your own box 1v1 isn't a great time to be dribbling out.

Coaching Points: Small touches to bring defender forward, Use of skill move, attack space in behind, Change of speed to leave defender behind.

Stage 1 (10 mins)

Tag style game - Attackers need a ball while other players need a pinnie in their shorts.

Attackers need to dribble around looking to seal someones pinnie, however the ball must be at their feet at all times therefore ball control is key.

Players will struggle at the start because their touches will be huge to cover ground quickly, show them that taking smaller touches you can change directon and close in on the players with the pinnies.

Stage 2 (15 mins)

Encourage players to look for space! If players are running straight towards the goal, they need to have their head up looking to attack the space and create an angle to shoot. Players score 1 point for dribbling on the end line however 2 points if they create space to shoot and score on goal.

Progression 1: Winners move up losers go down

Progression 2: Bonus point if they any of the skill moves worked on in previous weeks.

Stage 3 (15 mins)

In this stage we have a 1v1 towards goal with an endzone that the defender cannot enter! If the player can beat the defender in the field and dribble into the end zone they're able to shoot on goal.

No more than 2 in a line waiting for a turn, you can set this game up multiple times to accomadate larger numbers - Repitition is key.

Progression 1: Defenders switch after every tackle.

Progression 2: The winner is the goal keeper (become GK after scoring)

Stage 4 (20 mins)

In this stage we have a 3v3 game however we're focusing on the types of touches the player needs to take at certain points in the game. See in the diagram how the white attack is dribbling past the blue player, they need to accelerate in order to beat the player however where the redbox is they'll need to slow themselves back down otherwise the next defender will win possession off the heavy touch.

Encourage players to attack at speed but just knocking and running after the ball isn't going to work when playing against good defenders. Have them understand when and where to use big and small touches. i.e. into space would be larger touches, when approaching a defender they need to be smaller.
