Screen 1

Split field Scrimmage

5v5 plus Goalkeepers. Halfway line. Each team has 3 attackers and two defenders. Players must stay in their half of the field. In the example above, Red is building out.

Exceptions:

1. Player who plays the ball forward may join the attack (as shown above)

2. Player who plays the ball forward may not join the attack but one of the other defenders may.

3. After ball is played forward, any of the defenders may join.

Forwards cannot track back into their defensive half.

Teams can bring more players forward by playing back and then forward again. (but this makes them vulnerable to a counteratack so they must press if they lose the ball)

Coaching Points:

1. Backs must "open the game" when building out to make the field wide and cause a problem for the two forwards who are pressing.

2. Forwards must time their runs to show for a pass. They should not be standing at the midfield line waiting for the ball. They should hide behind defenders and cause problems as to which defender will track them if they check back for the ball.

3. Forwards should time their runs back for the ball. Do not arrive too soon or too late. They should arrive when the ball arrives. The player on the ball (Red A) determines when a pass will be played by picking up their head and looking up field. The receiving player (Red B) determines where the ball should be played by the shape of their run and their verbal and non-verbal signals.

4. The forwards should coordinate their movements so they do not both check back for the ball. One should stretch the backs by pushing forward (Red C) and the other should show for the ball.

Screen 2

Split Field Scrimmage

5v5 plus GKs. Each team has 3 Defenders and 2 Forwards. Players must stay in their own half.

Exception 1- If a defender plays the ball forward (A) she can join the attack (B).

Exception 2 - If a player plays forward, one of the other defenders can join the attack but not the player who played forward.

Exception 3- Once ball is played forward, any defender can join (the one in the best position)

Teams can play back and then forward again to get another player into the attack.

Coaching Points - Timing of runs from the forwards checking back is critical. They should not be standing at midfield waiting for the ball. They should stay between defenders and cause confusion and wait for the moment when their teammate lifts her head to spot a run, then they should arrive at the space when the ball arrives. Indicate where you want the ball with the shape of your run and your hand or voice.

Nugget for timing of run - The player on the ball determines "when" by lifting her head. Player off the ball indicates "where" by the shape of her run.

Can also be played with four defenders and three forwards.
