Turn and Pass (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 2 teams.
  • Same amount of players outside and inside.
  • On a 20 by 20 grid.
  • On small square inside the grid.

Instructions:

  • One team outside of the grid and the other team inside of the square with a ball each.
  • The drill start with the player with the ball dribble out of the square and look to pass the ball to one of the outside player.
  • Outside player when they received the ball must pass the ball back to the player that pass the ball to him.
  • When inside players received the pass back must turn and dribble inside of the square before look for another out side player to pass the ball.
  • After a series of repetition teams change place.

Coaching Points

Half turn receive the ball on half turn body position.

Positive touch to the direction you want to go.

Open you hip to receive the ball.

Pull back turn

  • Step 1 – place your standing foot next to the ball
  • Step 2 – place your other foot on top of the ball (do not step over the ball and use the heel!)
  • Step 3 – Pull the ball backwards (maintaining control of the ball)
  • Tip – make sure you turn your body the right way. E.g. if your standing foot is your left foot, your right foot is dragging the ball back, then you want to turn with the ball in a clockwise rotation until your facing the opposite direction.
Out side turn
  • Step 1 – place your standing foot besides the ball (leaving a bit more distance this time between the foot and ball than you did with the drag-back turn.)
  • Step 2 – your non-standing foot will pass between the gap of the foot and ball. Young players can stand this foot down just past the ball; older players will be expected to incorporate steps 2 and 3 together.
  • Step 3 – twist your standing foot so the outside of the foot is parallel with the ball (right foot would be 2 o’clock, left foot would be facing 10 o’clock.)
  • Step 4 - using the outside of the foot, hook the ball in the opposite direction than your currently facing whilst keeping control
  • Step 5 – turn your body in the same direction as the ball and face the opposite way.
  • Tip – it helps to have a low center of gravity with knees bent and arms out whilst doing this soccer moves turn.
Inside turn
  • Step 1 – place your standing foot directly behind the ball (lean forward and stay low)
  • Step 2 – your non-standing foot needs to come round and make contact with the back of the ball
  • Step 3 – using the inside of your foot, hook the ball behind you
  • Step 4 – turn (or pivot) in the same direction as the ball so you’re facing opposite direction.
  • TIP – this soccer moves turn is much easier to do at speed and if your ‘on-your-toes’ i.e. not flat footed.

2v2 Passing and Receiving (15 mins)

Organization:

  • 4 x teams of 3 players and halfway line clearly marked.

  • 2 x teams begin the game whilst the 2 x remaining teams take up a position at either end of the area, behind the cones.

Instructions

  • Attacking Team: Maintain positions and possession of the ball with the emphasis on playing forwards to any of the players stood behind the cones, through a penetrating pass or playing around the Defenders. Every successful through ball is worth 1 point and team in possession can only pass to the team waiting behind the cones when the ball enters their designated attacking half.

Defending Team: If the attacking team successfully penetrate to the waiting team, the Defending team takes up positions at the end of the area behind the cones

When a player behind the cones receives a through ball, the whole team transitions to attack and attempts to get over the halfway line and then play a forward pass to the opposite team behind the cones.

Coaching Points

  • Players should maintain diagonal angles and good distances between the attackers and keeping the structure to penetrate effectively by using both areas to offer good shape.
  • To create numerical and/or positional superiority players need to provide passing options and penetrate the opposition in front of the ball and behind the defense.
  • With the correct weight and decision players need to make decisions to play in front, around or through the defense.
