Description

Implementing Rondos within our training regiment is to ensure it is done with our playing style and tactical plans in mind within a limited amount of space. It encourages players to make quick decisions with each situation in possession being different causing players to solve the problem within seconds recognizing where there is space to attack. Three teams compete to maintain possession 6vs3 with one team who lost possession being the defenders (yellow). It is 3vs1 in one square with 3 supporting players each occupying space in the other 3 squares. The team in possession (Red) combine 4 passes and then switch the play to any Blue in any of the other three squares. All Blues migrate to the square with the ball and the Red spread out to the other three squares unoccupied waiting for a switch of play. Defenders must always come from the square in the middle. Plenty of balls should be available to be passed in by the coach carefully to maintain possession and ensure continuous play with intensity. If the defending team (yellow) wins/intercepts the ball, they must pass the ball to a square with only one player and occupy the other three squares while the team who lost possession run to the middle area and then transitions to pressure the ball in a 3vs1.

Rondo 3vs1 with Transition

An area of 20x20 yds with each of the four squares being 10x10 yds. Three teams of three players.Session begins with a 3vs1 in one square. Upon completion of 4 passes within the square, Reds must switch the ball to one of the Blues. The other two Blue players then enter that square to support and play 3vs1 against a new defender. If the defender wins the ball, s/he can transfer to one of the other squares and the team that lost the ball become the defending team.

Coaching Points:

Dispersal - Width & Depth using the entire area - players open their body and see the majority of the field by maximizing the space available to them. 'Make the defender run by spreading out'.

Angle of Support - be in a position to receive the ball at your feet and the ball can not be intercepted. Open your body to see all teammates.

Receiving the Ball - on the front foot to change direction of the ball creating space

Quick Transition - recognize when the ball must be switched and play simply, early, quickly and fluently.
