Phase of play
Blues to attack in a 2-3-3 formation
Greens to defend in a 4-2-1 formation
Blue overload 8 v 7 (Excluding goalkeeper)
The session starts with the central defender for the Blue team and he can chose where the pass will go. Do they want to play a penetrative pass in behind the defenders for the strikers or wingers to run onto? Does the CB want to play to their wingers or do they want to play in central midfielders feet?
After the pass is played, the session becomes live and the Blue team want to get the ball wide to deliver whenever possible to do so. If the Greens turn over the possession, then they must score in either of the two goals in less than 5 passes. The idea behind this is you want to work with the Blue team and the delivery from crosses and filling the box that you want them to be back in possession as quickly as possible. Becomes an easy coaching point around transition.
The reason for the Red traffic cones on each side of the pitch is to have this as an offside line but can be used as a reference point for the Green team. So if they are out of possession they must try and squeeze up the pitch to be in line with the cones. If they don't have this, what tends to happen is the defenders start to drop off towards their box to defend deeper.
Functional practice on finishing from crosses from wide areas (20 mins)
The session starts with a passing combination from the number 5 into the midfield, midfield combine to play a long pass outside to the winger. Once that pass is played wide, the session then becomes live (everyone can move). The winger can then choose if he attacks against the opposition left back or plays a one two with the striker or if he wishes to step over the ball and maybe come inside to test the goalkeeper.
