Pressure - First Defender Principles
Key Factors:
Nearest defender pressures. Arrive as the ball arrives.
Body position low, balanced, watch the ball, angle away from danger area (goal).
Show restraint - be patient.
Cues to press - bad touch, bad pass, facing goal.

Set Up: two 20*12 grids. One large goal on one end; 3-yard target goal on the other end.
Players: 9 players per grid, including one GK in goal. Divide players into two teams - number 1-4. One player from each team can be a server - rotate players.
Description: Server calls out a number eg. "1". #1 player from each team steps onto the pitch. The server plays the ball into one of the two players. Player receiving the ball becomes the attacker and looks to score on the defender's goal.
Progressions:
1. The server can be used as support, but is not allowed to enter the field, creating a 2v1. Can limit to 1-2 touches.
2. Play 2v2. Server calls out two numbers.
Questions: Why do we need to close down quickly? Why low and balanced body shape? What do we take away from the attacker? (goal side, ball side).

Set Up: 30*25 grid. Two large goals. Balls in either goal as well as some along the sidelines for quick restarts.
Players: 3 teams of 5 (or 6). 4v4 (5v5) on the field with a GK. Team on the outside can be used as support -1 touch passes.
Description: Encourage lots of shooting. Restarts wither with the GK or with the coach. Rotate teams every 2 minutes. To win, a team must surrender the fewest number of shots on goal.
Questions: We are in front of our goal (18-yard box) - do we close quickly? Do we need to move as a unit? What happens if there are gaps between defenders?

Set Up: Quarter field at Pine Glen. Two large goals.
Players: 3 teams of 6. Two teams play 6v6 on the field, including GKs. One team rests.
Description: Normal game - regular rules. Once a goal is scored, the team that scores picks the ball out of goal and attacks in the opposite direction. The team that was scored on leaves the pitch and the resting team comes on to defend.
Note: if games are lasting longer than 2 minutes, start removing players from the teams. Eg. remove one player from team #1, wait 30 seconds, remove two players from team #2, etc.
Marking Game (15 mins)
Set Up: Quarter field - Pine Glen
Players: 3 teams of 6. 5v5 on the field with GKs. Two teams work; one rests. Rotate every two minutes.
Description: Normal game - regular rules apply. Each player is assigned a player to mark from the opposing team. Players can only defend against their assigned opposition. Re-starts also start with the server (coach).
