Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Warmup: 4v2

Warmup: 4v2 (20 mins)

Organization:

Two grids back to back as above. Each grid is 20x20 (adjust size as needed). Four players in each grid to start (all with same colour bib). Balls in pile with the coach in the middle of the field. Add grids as needed for number of players (can play 3v3 also, but then with only 1 defender).

Instructions:

Coach plays a ball in to either team. The team who have four players in the grid are the attacking team and attempt to score by passing the ball 5 times without the defender touching the ball. Defenders attempt to win the ball back and complete a pass back to the two players remaining in their side of the grid. Once defender wins the ball and passes back, the two defenders return to their grid and two defenders from the team who just lost the ball go to defend in the other grid (always 4v2). If no pass is on, the defenders can dribble across to the other grid as well.

Coaching Points:

* Once we win the ball, eyes up right away to find the pass back to the grid

* Look to penetrate (first with pass, then with dribble)

* Pressure and cover of players to win the ball back in attacker's grid

Progressions:

P- Adjust number of passes needed to score

R- Only one defender (only one if teams play 3v3)

R- Defenders get a point if they are able to complete pass back to their side (in addition to passing points)

5v2 Rondo to Goal (30 mins)

Organization:

As above. Grid is approx 15x15 (Adjust size as needed/add additional grids). Two pugg goals 10 yards away from grid on each side as shown. Balls in pile with the coach in middle of grid. 5 attackers, 2 defenders in grid.

Instructions:

Players play a 5v2 rondo. Defenders attempt to steal the ball, and possess it long enough to score at their goal (D). Attackers attempt to put 5 passes together before they can go score at their goal (A). Play 90 second games, switch defenders afterwords.

Coaching Points:

* Try to score as quickly as possible after winning the ball back (defender)

* Hunt the ball in a pack (stay compacted) (defender)

* Good open body shape recieveing the ball (attacker)

* Eyes up to find passes/diquise play (attacker)

Progressions:

R- Play just 5v2 Rondo, defenders switch with player that made mistake once they get the ball instead of going to goal

P- Attackers must make 10 passes, and defenders must dribble out fo the grid before shooting

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Counter Attack: numbers down to numbers up

Counter Attack: numbers down to numbers up (40 mins)

Organization:

In blue box (approx 30x40) Four attackers (in grey) and two defenders (yellows). Balls with coach in pile as shown. The other grid is entire half, 3 attackers and 2 defenders with a keeper. Two pugg goals set up on top of blue area as a counter goal.

Instructions:

Coach plays ball into attackers in blue grid. Attackers then must get the ball out of the blue grid to a attacker in the half grid. Two attackers may then join the attack (5v2) but players must score within 20 seconds of the ball traveling into the attacking half. If defenders win the ball, they can score into the counter goals (blue area). If defenders win the ball and can play coach in defending half, they can score a point. Attackers score a point by scoring a goal before the 20 seconds is up.

Coaching Points:

* Awareness of next player (where is the next pass?)

* Eyes up to make accurate passes

* Hunt the ball as a pack (close space, concentration)

* Quality of end product (do we score goals?)

Progressions:

R- Only 1 defender in each area

P- Coach passes the ball to defenders to start activity

P- Players must score in 5 passes or less (still under 20 seconds)

P- Even numbers in attacking half (3v3 instead of 3v2)
