DEFENSIVE PRINCIPLES

(#1, #2, #3, #4, #5,)

TOP PRIORITIES:

1) WORK IN SMALL GROUPS (3s) TO DENY PENETRATION AND SLOW PLAY DOWN

2) BE COMPACT AND ORGANIZED

3) PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK!!!!!

3) ORGANIZED QUICKLY ON SET PIECES AND DEAD BALLS

1. PRIMARY FOCUS:

Can we be super patient in our defending, not diving in/jabbing at the ball? Good 1 v 1 defending.

Can we back our teammates up by providing cover in defensive situations?

Can we compact and organized and move as a unit

Work together to force the ball out wide or negative and force mistakes in the attacking team.

DO NOT JAB AT A BALL THAT YOU ARE NOT 10000% GUARANTEED TO WIN!!

PUSH OUT/UP WHEN THE BALL GOES NEGATIVE (AWAY FROM OUR GOAL)

Without too much prompting from coach, I want us to focus on pushing the backline up the field to be more compact and not allow the opponent space to play in.

This also helps us stay connected to our midfielders/attackers when we win possession and push the ball forward.

OUR SAFE ZONE AND THE AREA WE ARE TRYING TO PROTECT AT ALL COSTS IS THE CENTRAL AREA IN THE DEFENSIVE AND MIDDLE THIRD OF THE FIELD.

* DO NOT allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide!

ORGANIZED QUICKLY ON SET PIECES - organization must happen quickly !!! This is especially true on throw ins when we must transition and respond defensively IMMEDIATELY!!!

(Recognize mismatches, recognize strongest players, shape of the wall (tallest players in the direct shooting line, etc, etc). Man to man on corners

High on the 18 yd line for free kicks (TRACK RUNNERS!!!!)

WIN THE PHYSICAL BATTLE!!!

*GK ROLE:

*Ask the question: "can they score from there"

*Starting position a little higher to keep connectivity with back line to some extent

*Be available as a back pass option when we are being pressed back towards our goal

*Punch aerial balls in the box whenever possible!

BE PATIENT: DON'T RELEASE THE BALL TOO QUICKLY

MIDFIELD PRINCIPLES

(#6, #8, #10)

1) WE ARE TRYING TO PLAY OUT FROM THE BACK WHEN THE GK HAS THE BALL

2) MINIMIZE TOUCHES ON THE BALL SO WE CAN GET THE BALL MOVING MORE QUICKLY (ESPECIALLY IN CENTRAL AREAS)

3) THINK ABOUT OUR OFFSET POSITIONS IN MIDFIELD SO WE DON'T GET TO FLAT .

Our priorities come straight from our most recent training sessions (quality first touch, open up our hips/open our body shape, receive the ball across the body on the back/further foot, movement to create support angles, release the ball early, etc).

*The work of our #6 & #8 (central midfielders) is essential in our ability to play out from the back.

*Dropping down as the center defenders spread out. Rotating back out if the space is not available

*CAN WE CREATE GOOD SUPPORT ANGLES FOR PASSING ALL THE TIME!!

*CAN WE ENSURE THE ACCURACY OF OUR PASSING?

* CAN WE WORK HARD TO GET OUR BODY SHAPE RIGHT EARLY ON, OPENING UP OPPORTUNITIES FOR EARLY PASSES

* MIDFIELD PATIENCE TO FIND POCKETS OF SPACE BETWEEN DEFENDERS/PENETRATING DEFENSIVE LINES, ETC

******************************************************************************

ATTACKING PRINCIPLES

(#7, #9, #10, #11)

TOP PRIORITIES!!

1) AVOID DRIBBLING OR PASSING INTO NUMBERS DOWN SITUATIONS!!

2) PLAYING OUT FROM THE BACK

3) WIDTH, WIDTH, WIDTH, WIDTH AND MORE WIDTH

* Must be alert for long balls if our attempts to play out from the back are high pressed or defended.

*WE MUST MAKE BETTER DECISIONS WITH THE BALL BASED ON WHAT WE SEE:

Does our teammate have more pressure than us? don't pass

Is our teammate in a better, further advanced position than us? pass

Is there alot of space between us and the defenders? take the space

Are there 3-6 defenders right in front of us on our side of the field? look for the switch or pull the ball back and drop pass to another line (midfield line, defensive line)

*Vary our runs, vary our passes in advanced areas, vary our speed, vary the number of support players, vary central vs. wide passes, etc.

*Keep your head up and avoid running into dead corners where defenders have the advantage.

*Use the ball safely and retain possession when faced with numbers down situations in the attacking third.

As with our midfielders, can we get the ball out wide early and then play from there. Take advantage of the space in wide areas or come back central after the defense has shifted, switch the ball to the other side of the field.

ACCURACY NOT POWER ON OUR FINISHING!! We blasted the ball over the bar way too many times on Saturday! Let's get that fixed for Sundays game. MAKE THE GK WORK BY HITTING THE TARGET WITH ANY SHOT

SET PIECES - Things to remember!!

Throw ins - possession not aimlessly throwing the ball down the field

-Possess on Free kicks anywhere further than 35 yds. Look to get the ball moving as quickly as possible but avoiding playing into pressure.

-Corners: Dubem will be primary corner taker (Alex and Bora as back ups or choose to take short corner )

Attacking Free Kicks - Dubem has primary responsibility (Alex and Bora as back ups)

PKs - Alex is primary Dubem is the back up
