Passing Practice (15 mins)

Explanation

-Purpose of drill is to warm up physically and mentally, as well as thinking about ‘making the pitch big’, and completing the 'killer pass'

-2 groups of 5 inside circle

-Red team must pass and move within the circle to each team mate, avoiding yellow players

- Yellow team dribbles with ball at their feet, trying to block the passing lanes of other teams

- Blue team stays outside of circle and attempts to complete long passes to team mates on other side

-Minimal touch passing

-Pass must be firm along the ground

- Inside groups act as a passive defence

-Outside group moves along outside edge of whole square, attempting to complete passes to team mates on outer sides

-Players must communicate with each other (directing play and movement)

-Swap player roles every 5 minutes

Perception (Seeing/Hearing):

-Move to make make space to receive pass

-Look for gaps to recieve pass

Decision (Recognition/Anticipation/Options/Choices):

-Time pass to avoid collision with other player

- Move to space

Execution (Timing/Speed/Quality/Clarity):

-Passing must be firm

-Players should make an effort to move into space to find ball

-Players must call name of pass and direct player where to go or who to pass to

Positional Game (20 mins)

Explanation

8 v 8

-Purpose of game is to get us thinking about collectively pressing, and pressing high

-Game starts when coach serves ball to one of the yellow players

-Offside rules apply

-GK is waiting in rear zone to receive ball from yellow team (which equals a goal)

- Blue teams objective is to collectively press and prevent yellow team from passing the ball to the goalkeeper

-Blue can only score if ALL yellow players are in the attacking half

-Yellow always starts

-Yellow must take at least 2 touches before attempting to pass to keeper.

-For Blue, unlimited time when in BPO, one attempt to score when in BP (Blue)

-Active defending (at least at 80%)

-If drill is too easy for blue add another player to yellow team

Team Task:

Collectively press high, with the intent to deny opposition space and time on the ball

Maintain shape (back 4 with #6 sitting in front)

Player Tasks/Actions:

2,3,4,5 need to work as a defensive unit, maintain structure and stay relatively close to each other when in BPO.

3 and 4 need to communicate to midfield when and where to apply pressure (act as triggers)

10,8 and 6 apply pressure on ball carrier when in BPO

2 & 5 support 6,8 & 10 in attack

3 & 4 offer option for back pass when in BP

Yellow team can choose to play through to GK on sides, middle or simply over the top

- 3,4 need to push high and provide communication to 6,8 and 10 to press forward

Cues (To assist Perception, Decision, Execution):

- Should we be sitting deep defending the goal keeper, or sitting high preventing the incoming ball? Which suits our team model?

- How close or far apart from each other should we be to prevent the ball being played through?

- What can our fullbacks do to support 6 when we have BP?

- What should our 3 & 4 be doing when we have BP

- How could we have prevented the initial pass?

- Should we be close to our defensive unit, or should we be stretching out wide to mark the wingers?

- What should we do if the opposition yellow team) switches play?

- 2,3,4,5, should you have committed to that tackle? Do you need to win the ball or simply apply pressure to force player to pass back?
