Welsh way principles - Staying narrow / Stop split passes / Force Wide / Protect the space behind
Area Size 18mtr x 12 mtr with a half way line
Football behind the Yellow outside players
4 x Blue, 4 x Red and 3 Yellow bibs
4 x 3 min with time set aside for terminal feedback in the breaks.
The Session Details
4v4 in the middle with 3 common players (Yellow) in the middle and outside
Team in possession try and play through the opposition and score by transferring the ball from one end yellow player to the other. If they are successful they can maintain possession of the ball. Teams in possession can use the yellow common players that creates a 7v4. As we are working with the reds out of possession we are looking to press quickly force them to play with their heads down and to block/intercept the passing lines and force them wide then we can leave the two furthest players and force them to go back or give the ball away.
The coach is to work with one team only, for this example I'm coaching the
RED team out of possession.
If the Red team is having to much success in possession, condition will be applied such as number of touches, time limit in possession.
Conditions, Challenges and Targets RED team
1. Can we protect the middle of the pitch force them wide where we can control where they play.
2. Keep narrow and avoid the split pass so we force them back or win the ball
3. Nearest player closes down the player with the ball, 2nd player giving cover and blocking easy out balls so we can force them down the line. 3 player will be waiting to block the pass down the line, 4 player can deal with the central player leaving the two furthest player. (Press must be aggressive to avoid long ball to the free players)
4. Limited touches in possession for the outside players
5. Extra 2 points for teams in possession if they break the lines by threading split passes though the opposing players or over, 1 point if they manage to go around
Red Team Key points
1. Defend narrow
2. Force out wide
3. Protect the middle
4. Prevent split passes
5. Make the pitch small
6. Leave the furthest opposition, but protect the space behind
7. Press the ball as a team
Blue Team will be managed to be realistic and challenge the Red team.
1. Make the pitch big (Width and Depth)
2. Try to play through, around and over
3. Can they move the ball quicker
4. Try to split players with a pass
5. Look to play forward
What could happen
1. Red team have more of the ball (Limit no. of touches)
2. Blue Team play it safe and only go around (Extra point through the middle)
3. By making the pitch small, leaving our selfs exposed to the ball over the top (protect the space behind if full pressure not on)
