1v1 Technical Practice

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 1 x 7 aside goal with flat marker gate 3-4 yards from line
  • 1 x samba goal either side of 7 aside goal on the angle

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK starts at disc gate
  • Coach gives trigger to drop deep  (i.e. replicating blocked shot or poor clearance falling to attacker in the box)
  • Coach volleys to GK. If GK holds then they play out to server 2 to attack their mini goal 1v1
  • If GK parries then coach passes ball to server 2
  • Server 2 can shoot or dribble in towards goal

    Coaching points/learning objectives
  • Decision making with choice of technique- what triggers help to inform GKs choice of technique? (Dive at feet on loose touch/ over hit pass; narrow block in angles situations to avoid being megged/ if ball is close to attackers feet; spread in central areas to be a barrier to as much of the goal as possible, recognising triggers to suggest striker may shoot)
  • Hands in front
  • Head and shoulders always square to play (no twist)
  • Desire to keep ball out of the net!! And rebounds on second phase
  • Any technical information relating to different 1v1 techniques

Progression(s)

  • Coach strikers from floor
  • On second phase server 2 positioned behind coach so they can play them in for 1v1 at either goal (replicating diagonal through ball to winger)
  • Coach can also take touch forward to attack 7 aside goal centrally on second phase (starting to look at the spread technique)

Screen 3

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 1 GK, 1 FB (Winger out of possession), 1 CDM (CAM out of possession)
  • 4 mannequins to replicate compact back 4 out of possession

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK receives pass from full back and plays through opposition front line into CDM
  • CDM then becomes opposition CAM (replicates loss of possession in defensive third) and can either play through ball for winger; burst through on goal theirself or combine with winger to end up in 1v1
  • If GK wins ball team mates expand and look to receive pass in transition before resetting for next rep

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Decision making of GK (Attack ball or drop off/ choice of technique); looking for triggers to help inform technique
  • Rough guide on distances:
    - 1v1 received outside 18 with recovering defender- drop back and force striker to shoot or risk being tackled
    - 1V1 received between 18-12 GK at the 6 to shut off as much of goal as possible
  • Encourage game realistic movments by attacking players i.e. winger curving run between FB and CB or widening then attacking space behind fullback

Progression(s)

  • Central 1V1s (Winger becomes #9)
  • Repeat both sides
