15 Minutes Maximum
Welsh Way Principles:
Understand when and how to switch play to exploit the space in wide areas
Organisation / Area Size:
60x50 yards minus tapered corners
One player is added to the Reds & the 2 neutral wide players become Blues
Blues play a GK-4-2-3-1 minus wingers in a GK-4-3-1
Reds play a GK-4-4-2 minus fullbacks and one ST in a GK-2-4-1
How:
Building on the prior practice, the Blues continue to be coached on switching play by having players maintain width to make the pitch big, and then using those players to complete the switch of play.
Play in 3x 3 minute blocks with a rest and terminal intervention after each block.
Explanation:
Play starts with game realism - goal kicks/throw-ins.
The Blues are to be coached in the principle of switching play. With the neutral wide players locked in to maintain width and make the pitch big, the Blues are to be coached on who, when and how to switch play.
After receiving the ball in a wide area, the Blues have to move the ball to the opposite wing before they can score. To continue the coaching from the prior practice, their fullbacks must maintain their width to keep the pitch big and the team must move the ball quickly to exploit space on opposite wings and create opportunities to then move into central areas.
To score, if the Reds win possession they have 5 seconds to score in the goal.
For the Blues:
1) Score in any fashion +1 goals
2) Score after switching play +2 goals
Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
The conditions on the practice change with the removal of the wide channels and addition of the tapered corners. With the addition of wide players to the Red team, their challenge to stay compact continues and the wide players are challenged to tuck in if the ball is on the opposite side of the pitch. The challenge for the Blue continues and they must still switch the play from one side to the other before scoring. To progress, the Blues can be challenged to have to switch play twice before scoring.
Key Points:
Weight of pass
Quick ball movement
Switch as quickly as possible
Pass into receiver's back foot to allow them to play forwards
Interventions:
Terminal (during rest breaks)
Concurrent

Welsh Way Principles:
Understand when and how to switch play to exploit the space in wide areas
Organisation / Area Size:
60x50 yards
5 yard width channels marked on each wing
Both teams with a GK play 7v7 in a GK-4-2-3-1 minus fullbacks and wingers in a GK-2-3-1
1 neutral player locked into each wide channel
How:
Working with the Blues, they are coached on how to use the two neutral players to switch play in order to exploit space in wide areas and play around the opposition.
Play in 3x 3 minute blocks with a rest and terminal intervention after each block.
Explanation:
Play starts & restarts with the Blue GK.
The Blues are to be coached in the principle of switching play. With the neutral wide players locked in to maintain width and make the pitch big, the Blues are to be coached on who, when and how to switch play.
1st 3 min block: Ball speed - correct weight of pass and speed of ball movement to maintain tempo and ensure the pass is received
2nd block:Who can switch - CBs using fullbacks/Midfield using wingers
3rd block:Decision making on when to switch - is there space on the opposite wing/are the opposition staying compact and we need to quickly switch play to move the opposition to create space
To score, if the Reds win possession they have 5 seconds to score in the goal. For the Blues, if the ST wins possession that player can shoot immediately (+1 for a goal). If any other player wins possession, the Blues must use both neutral players (switch play) before they can score (+2 for a goal after switching).
Challenges, Conditions & Targets:
The practice is conditioned with the 2 neutral players locked into their channels who are restricted to 2 touches. The Blue ST is challenged to try to and win possession whenever possible and is rewarded with being able to shoot immediately if they do so. The Blues as a team, have the additional challenge of having to switch play using both wings before they can score (unless the ST wins possession). With only the neutral players allowed in the channels, the Reds are challenged to stay compact to force the Blues to have to play around them to score.
