Set Up

Set up large rectangular grid with five cones at each end as shown in the diagram. Use cones to mark a halfway line and split players up into two teams. Each team takes a side.

Instructions

Players are ‘safe’ on their own side. The goal of the game is for players to capture the other team’s cones and bring them to their own side. If a player goes onto the opponents side to try to capture a cone and is tagged they must sit down wherever they were tagged. A player can be rescued if a teammate comes by and tags them. Once a player is rescued, both players may walk back to their own side safely. If a player is in the opponents territory but has their hand on one of the cones at the end, they are safe. Once they pick up the cone and try to take it back they can be tagged.

This game can be played with running or by specifying different dynamic locomotions for players to do such as speed walking, galloping, or skipping in order to move. Using different dynamic locomotions works best for getting players warmed up.

Coaching Points

There are many different strategies in this game, for example players can go into opponents territory for a ‘decoy’ run which takes attention away from teammates who can sneak by to get to a cone. Teams can decide if they want to play more offensively or defensively.

Moves of Week skill The Scissor

Objective

To develop the technique to preform the scissor move

Description

Demonstrate a good example of the proper technique to perform the scissor or let a technically skilled player demonstrate. Preferably demonstrate with a defender so the players can see how it works as move to beat the opponent.

The scissor move is designed to make your opponent move one way and be wrong footed, so the attacker can then move the ball to the other side and pass the defender. The action is to step over the ball with one foot (in to out) pretending to move the ball one way with the outside of the foot, before then quickly taking the ball to the other side with the outside of the opposite foot.

Coaching Points

1. The step over should be done at a high speed.

2. Look over the ball to watch where the defender is and what he does.

3. Perform the movement at the right time. If it is too early, the defender can then recover. If it is too late, the player will then get to close to the defender and they can intercept the ball.

4. Bend the knees before making the second movement away from the defender, and then they can accelerate away with power.

5. When the defender moves with the feint, quickly touch the ball with outside of the opposite foot to take it past the defender.

6. Make sure they always have control of the ball and do not make too heavy a touch.

7. Accelerate away from the defender with the ball so they have no time to recover.

The circle rotation warm-up can be used for players to practice passing and volleying depending on skills

Set Up

Have players partner up, one partner goes to the perimeter of the center circle with a ball and the other partner starts inside the center circle. If you don’t have access to a center circle you can also set up a circle with cones.

How It Works

Players in the center run in a rotation performing passes, headers, or volleys with the perimeter players. After each pass, the center players must run back to the center before starting their next run. All players in the center rotate around in the same direction so that they link up with every perimeter player once as they go around. After a full rotation perimeter players switch with center players so that players perform both roles.

Coaching Points

Make sure players are communicating and checking to the ball to receive passes. When checking to the ball players should shift gears from a slower speed to moving quickly towards the ball. This simulates checking in a game where an attacking player is trying to create separation from a defender.
