Intense session focusing on counter pressing in the attacking third once the ball has been given away.
Ideally have the players working within playing groups in order to build familiarity
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Session is to replicate quick reaction to turnover of possession and stop the opposition being able to play out of the area of the pitch the ball was lost within. Secondary learning about playing under pressure and changing the point of attack following winning of possession
Set Up
3v3v3 (+1)
The +1 in this instance would be a creative player to encourage them to play with their head up in and around the vicinity of the ball and always in a position to be able to receive.
Rules
- 3v3+1 keep possession of the ball within the grid
- Other 3 players look to work together to press the ball, keep in one area and win back /intercept
- Once they have won the ball back they must aim to play into the +1 who then passes into another grid to another player. If the colour which gave away the ball stop this happening then the original colour remain in
Coaching Points
- stop forward progression
- working together to make play predictable
- shape to press and distances (cover and balance)
- pressing triggers (flat pass, bad touch, back to play when receiving)
- changeover of possession applying pressure on ball carrier and blocking passing lanes

Attacking and Defending Transition game
- Coach plays into Red
- Red player receives takes one touch and then shoots
- Blue immediately counter attack with 2 players and look to get a shot off
- Red counter with three in 3v2
- Blue counter with four in 4v3
- Continues until all players are involved
Rule: once you cross the half way line you cannot play the ball backwards
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Rules
- Defending team must start outside of the offside line for realism
- Attacking team aim to score. Should the blue team win then they aim to dribble into the middle area, if they get there then they become the attacking team
- If attacking team score or force a corner then they retain possession and attack again
- If attacking team miss the target and /or the goalkeeper saves then they play out and the blues attempt to enter the middle area
- Should the ball go out wide then coach plays into the blues who aim to play out and into the middle area
Coaching Points
- def structure within attacking phase
- stopping forward pass
- making play predictable'
- defensive shape /distances / pressure cover and balance
- depth of the defensive shape
- pressing triggers (square pass, bad touch, receipt of ball with back to play, pass to the GK)
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
- Defending team must be within one vertical grid of the ball (3421 far side wingback doesn't need to be within 1 vertical grid)
- Balls won in the attacking third are worth double
Passing Practice (10 mins)
Passing Practice which builds the players into recognising the turnover and reacting. Secondary learning in the form of quick counter attacking following a mistake. Set up missing the target with a forward pass and then players working together in order to stop forward progression the of the opposition
Overview:
- Pass from red into blue (black line)
- Upon first touch of the blue then red become live
- Most advanced red puts pressure on the ball and deeper two reds come forward to provide cover and balance
- Blue are looking to dribble across the half way line
- If blue get across half way they go to the back of the blue line. If red win then two of the red (any) join the back of the blue group and the blue go to the back of the red group
Questions for the players
- Furthest red; what is their responsibility?
- Roles of the supporting players?
