Given the numbers, the team being coached will employ a
1-3-3-2 system so as to emulate a 1-4-3-3. The session will introduce each block and principles associated with defending in that blaock and subsequently with the others.

WARM UP 2- The final phase of the warm up has balls scattered above the area. Players jog about and on the command of the coach, quickly find a ball and "close" on it simulating closing an attacking player. On the next command, players return to jogging about awaiting command to close again.

Phase one offers functional training of the back 3 focusing in on pressure, cover, and side to side shape overall within the block. Speed and angle of closure from the first defender dictates movement from the rest of the block. If the defenders win the ball, they are to counter to the server who then may restart the activity by playing the ball into a forward. The goalkeeper's role is key as he / she must "quarterback" the defenders in terms of their movement. Managing space behind the back block is key as well. The position of the coach is behind the block / team defending so as to get a proper persepctive of play.

The midfield block is now introduced to face the oppositions's two forwards and 3 midfield players. Key to this phase is to insure spacing between the blocks is sound as well as cohesive movement toward the ball in order to make the space compact. Again, the goalkeeper manages the space behind the back line. Players within each block may (and sometimes should!) work together in order to close off a pocket where a penetrating pass can be made. Defending players once winning the ball counter to the server. Coach is behind the defending team.

In the final phase, three backs are introduced along with the opposing goalkeeper which now allows to feature the two defending forwards. Spacing, team shifting, pressure / cover are all in play. Note that this progression can be utilized to feature varying lines of confrontation, high versus low pressure, and showcase its effectiveness in making the field compact horizontally and vertically.
Session concludes by allowing the two teams to play with the hope (!) that all of the introduced elements are being executed by the players.

In the final phase of the session, teams play free of restrictions.
