Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): Encouraging effective communication when coaching

Handball

Organisation - Two teams play with matched-up or uneven numbers.

Description - Teams defend their own goal and try to score in the opposite goal by running and passing

the ball with team mates. If tagged when holding the ball, player must pass to a team mate. Change

players within teams after each game. Teams can adopt a team shape.

• Each team will be given a communication focus

Scoring method - Points are scored by throwing the ball into the opposite goal.

Objectives -

To recognise more than one way to commincate as a player

To indentify how we can differentiate out methods of communication in interventions

Things to consider…

• Players can throw, roll or bounce the ball to team mates

• Players try to regain the ball by intercepting a throw.

• If tagged when holding the ball, possession changes to the other team.

• Duration

• Add scenario for the last game (e.g if the yellows can score the next point they win the game)

Focus for coaches

• Visual, Auditory and practical demostation to understand how to play the game (Tactics board, on the grass)

• Pre set your bibs up to minimise distraction and so they are set up how you want them to be

• Points for communication

• Eye contact

• Pointing where they want the ball

• Verbal communication

• Drive bys

• Group action reviews

• Peer Reviews (15s as a team)
