Ball Mastery Warmup (10 mins)

Organization:

- As much space as needed, each player with a ball.

Instructions:

- Before the start of session, either inividual juggling or a large group rondo arrival activity.

- Ball mastery warmup, focusing on dribbling using different parts of the foot, changing speed, direction, and allowing the players to incorporate different skills and movements with their dribbling.

- Challenge the players with added pressure of time or # of touches

Coaching Points:

- Preparing ourselves physically and mentally for the session

- What are the different areas of the foot we would use and why?

- Head up as we are looking for open space, instead of going in a circle or a line can we change our direction and try and cover as much of the pitch as possible.

- Close control, one step in between every touch, how is our body position? Position of our foot?

- When taking bigger touches and exploding into space, what changes with our body position?

- Turning to find new space, identifying where the space is and moving into it.

Ball Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization: Players are on cones at edge of sqaure. Ideally 1 player per cone to minimize downtime. One player is at center of square (player rotates with others)

Instructions: Player 1 with ball at her cone passes to the central player and begins running to next cone. Central player returns the ball midway through the P1's run and P1 passes to next cone before running to that cone to wait for next turn.

Coaching Points:

What shape are we tracing on the field? How can we quickly recieve and distrribute the ball?

Through The Grids (20 mins)

Organization:

- Size of area 20x25 or adjust if needs be

- 3 different teams with 2 targets

Instructions:

- 2 zones evenly split. All players started in assigned zone and attempt to move the ball through each one from 1 target to the other to score

- Play starts from the target player and 1 team always defends creating a 2v1

- Each player must stay in their zone

- If defending win the ball, team losing the ball defends

- Progression 1) dribble through grids 2) rotation out of grids

Coaching Points:

- Communication off the ball, verbal and nonverbal to instruct the passer or receiver

- Movement off the ball to support the first attacker. Where? Why?

- What kind of touch are we taking to receive and set up our next pass?

- How can we disguise our next pass?

- Can the first attacker drag the defender out of position to create space for teammates?

- Timing of run. When? Where?

5v5+3 (20 mins)

Organization:

- Space adjusted as needed

- Two teams of 5, 3 jokers in the middle

Instructions:

- In possession, team organizes itself on the edge of the grid with two CB's, a RB, LB, and forward. Three jokers in the middle acting as DM, CM, CAM. Team out of possession is defending inside the grid trying to win the ball.

- Attacking team is trying to play the ball from CB's to Fwd

- When a team loses the ball, they get compact and move into the field to squeeze the space

- When a team wins possession, they quickly open up and take their shape as shown above.

Coaching Points:

- Two most basic concepts, especially when playing out from the back and in the transition moments: When we have the ball, what do we want to make the field?(Bigger) When we don't have the ball, what do we want to make the field?(Smaller)

- Body shape in receiving and playing, can we give ourselves more options with how we receive

- Communication off the ball to indicate the next pass, where it should go, how it should be delivered, and what should happen next

- Verbal and nonverbal cues that will initiate sequences. I.E. when CB passes into DM, body shape is initiating movement from one outside back vs the other outside back

- Can we attract the defenders into the middle by finding our DM or CM to then open up space for our outside backs

- Creating passing lanes and ensuring that we are maximizing our space. Rotation in the middle to create space inside and out

- In transition, when we win possession, when to reset to get our shape vs when to quickly play forwards to break through the lines

- How to reset and give ourselves time to open up

- Being proactive and reading the situation to realize when a transition moment is going to occur

- In transition, when we lose possession, when to step and win back immediately vs when to re-organize and recover behind the ball
