UEFA B - When and Where to Dribble - Guided Discovery Session

Organisation:

-Area 20x30

-Two Teams of 4

-Gates Using Cones spread around the area

.

Aim:

-To score a goal, teams must drible through one of the gates.

.

Rules:

-If ball goes out, play restarts from Coach

.

Progressions:

1 - Can't score in the same gate twice in a row, must find another gate.

2 - 6 Passes = 1 goal - Dribbling Through a Gate = 2 Goals

.

Reasons for Progressions:

1 - Not being able to score in the same gate twice in a row will force the attacking team to make full use of the pitch and will encourage them to transfer the ball to other areas of the pitch via passing or dribbling

2 - Making 6 passes 1 goal and dribbling through 2 goals gives the attacking team decisions to make. Dribbling through is the best way to score, but deciding whether to attempt to dribble through a gate or pass to a teammate is the key factor with this progression.

.

Key Points:

-Player must decide for themselves the correct time to dribble, and the correct direction to dribble - space or no space - head up

-Decisions: Players gate is blocked - turn into space elsewhere or pass to a teammate / Players gate is free - dribble quickly through gate

-If player gets tackled trying to dribble through a gate, they need to learn to be patient and aim to find a free gate or a teammate in space who could potentially find a free gate

-After the 6 passes progression comes in, players may get tackled trying to force their way through gates via dribbling, instead of looking for potential passes to teammates who could be in space.

-Also, the players could be too focused on making 6 passes and turn down the opportunity to dribble through a free gate

-The players need to learn from their mistakes and aim to make the correct decisions themselves

-Game Realistic - deciding when and where to dribble is a key factor in a football match. E.g. Defenders dribbling near their own goal while under pressure may not be the best idea, however if they are not under pressure they may need to dribble forwards to commit an opposition player to free up a teammate and disrupt the opposition shape.
