Description

U19 first session in new season. Last week was quite peaceful and calm but this week the intensity must start as they prepare for the 3rd league. Monday and Tuesday will be tough sessions which involved a good amount of explosive running and agility, while Wednesday will be an easy pre match session. Everything with the ball.

We start with a longer warm up with stretches and reaction game. The transfer game will be substituted into the 4v2 as there will be more touches on the ball in that. The players already know the rules from the possession drill as well did it on Friday, so that is perfect. Must be intense and players need to be smart with their movement and passing.

2v2s to finish the session off where players have multiple decisions to make when they are tired, and that is exactly what we want. Decision making under pressure and fatigue, who can control it and who can’t.

Should be around 1 hour 30 but with a big intensity.

10 players + 2 goalkeepers. Maybe somebody else will join. Let’s see.

Thursday: Match

Friday: Rest

Saturday: Match

Warm up stations

Long warm up as it is first session back, 15 minutes minimum.

Some players will probably have been lazy and not done running or played football over the summer, so risk of injury is a lot higher than normal at this time.

Stretching-movements-passing drill/bago and then into fast possession drill.

1-  Australia warm up. Jogging through with warm up and also dynamic stretches. Running around cones, high knees, heel flicks, high kicks, sidesteps etc. Finish with fast feet in between the cones.

2- Fun reaction game to get body moving and sharp movements. Change of direction, coach will shout red or blue and players will race through the gates. Set up 3 stations so that players are not waiting at all. Side-steps, shoulder to shoulder, and other ways as well.

3- Transfer game 6v2, make 7 passes and then you can transfer the ball to the other area. Turn into 6v3 and the intensity should start to get faster now and the pressing must be fast, and the ball must move fast as well. Progression is adding another defender and also letting the players in the middle block.

4v2 with mini goals

Drill after the warm up which must start to get intense and the ball must be moving fast. 3 teams, doesn’t matter who is in each team for this.

Rules:

Defenders (Blue) start pressing as soon as the ball is passed by the opposite team or coach. They are trying to win the ball back and score on the mini goals as fast as possible.

Attackers (red) try to make 7 passes and then transfer the ball to the other side.

10 passes = 1 point

Transfer = 2 points

Things to think about:

Not all standing in the same corner and treating it like a bago, move around and create different angles and options.

Don’t rush once you have made 7 passes, there is no shame in keeping the ball longer and waiting for the right pass.

Pressing in a pair and working together, not just running like chicken who do not know what is going on. Communicate together and try to force the ball into the corners and then attack!!!

When we win the ball back, what is our reaction? Do we get depressed and cry or do we try to win the ball back straight away or score on the mini goals!!!!!!!

Dimensions 12x12 each grid and 2 minute rounds, then swap. Keep points as well

Directional Possession (big cones)

A high intensity possession drill, use offsides and let players only stand for a certain amount of seconds in the end zone.

Rules are:

Players are trying to knock over the traffic cones by passing against it, if a player successfully knocks it over, they will bring it to their side and place it on the line with all the others.

1 team defends their 4 cones and vice versa. Once a team has knocked over all the cones and brought them over to their side, they have won the game and can rest. Otherwise in 5 minute sets.

SHOOT THE CONE OVER!!!!

Things to think about:

Playing out from the back and how to deal with a team pressing you

Finding through passes and scoring whenever there is an opportunity

Making decisions on if we want to press or not, or simply defend and stand close to cones?

Fast play, it should be popping around and be at a very good intensity.

When to use the long ball and find those spaces in behind, and good runs

2v2 BIG

2v2 with a sprint.

Players will start on the edge of the pitch in groups of 2. They must sprint through the gate and the coach will pass the ball in and the gates become goals. Players can pass or dribble through the gate in order to score a goal. As soon as the ball goes out or a goal is scored, the next group must start running through. Get through the gate and then score on the big goal without any pressure.

The amount of repetitions and time depends on how many players we have for this session. Most likely each team will have 5 rounds and then there will be a break. This is will be a tough drill but it is fitness with the ball and competition, which the players will enjoy a lot more rather then just running from box to box.

10 goals and then rest or 5 minutes.

Things to think about:

Staying calm on the ball and not rushing things because you are tired, making good decisions under pressure and fatigue.

Creativity and dribbling, go into 1v1 situations and make something happen. Do not be scared to dribble, this is about finding ways to get past your opponent. Combinations with the ball and rotations without the ball are very important, make sure to promote this.

Not standing still when we have passed the ball, straight away make a run or get on the ball again.
