Warm-Up (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 20x20 area

2. Divide players into two groups

3. Start with everyone with a ball

Instructions:

1. Players are to dribble their ball throughout the grid while avoiding contact with other players

2. 1 point every successful dribble between two players of the opposite team

Guided Questions/Coaching Points:

1. Look to find gaps between players

2. Accelerate between those players (big touch into space)

3. Observe player behaviors and identify trends.

Progressions:

1. Set players into groups of 2 and have them pass between two players of the opposite team.

Main Activity: Technical Repetition & Skill Development (20 mins)

Organization:

1. Playing area split into four evenly-sized zones.

2. One ball per group; spare on the outside.

3. Two mini goals.

Instructions:

1. Players start by setting up in alternating zones (as pictured).

2. Each team looks to connect passes from one side to the next.

3. Reinforce passing and receiving techniques.

4. After 3-5 minutes, progress to allow more movement.

Regressions/Progressions:

1. Remove one ball; teams plays competitive game (score in mini goal).

2. No defending in shaded area/endzone.

3. Reduce to 2 zones (details below)

Coaching Points/Questions:

1. Movement to find gaps to receive.

2. Movement/body shape to receive on the half turn.

3. Quality (weight and accuracy) of pass.

4. Quality (weight and direction) of first touch.

5. Movement to attack a different zone -- on the move to arrive with the ball.

Progression (10 mins)

Organization:

1. Reduce field to only 2 zones (3v3/4v4 each half)

Instructions:

1. Players work together to get the ball to the attacking players

2. Defenders may now pressure and take the ball away

3. Pass must be made to a teammate in the forward half

4. Attacking players work together to score
Progressions:

1. Player must continue their run into the attacking half after playing a forward pass

2. Encourage players to advance into attacking half if they dribble past an opponent (1v1)

Coaching Points/Questions:

1. When is a good moment to penetrate?

2. How can I create a passing angle to receive the ball?

3. What if I have no options forward?

Conditioned Game (30 mins)

Organization:

1. Field set up as shown.

2. Two goals with GKs if available.

3. Field divided into 3 zones.

Instructions:

1. Teams of 3-5

2. Players are to look to get forward as a team and score in the zone furthest up the field

3. Scoring in defensive zone: 1 pt. Midfield zone: 2pts. Attacking zone: 3pts

4. Restarts: throw-ins and goal-kicks.

Coaching Points/Questions:

1. How can we find/create an opening?

2. How do we move to get unmarked?

3. Is there open space I can attack into?

3. What are my options if I cannot get forward?

4. How do we support a teammate that cannot attack?
