Introduction (10 mins)

Organization:

- 30x30 area

- Ball per player

Instructions:

- Players dribble around area, utilizing different parts of the foot.

- Coach isolates individual/combinations of parts of the foot for players to practice with. Set 30 second time limit for players to get as many touches as possible.

Coaching Points/Questions:

- "What part of the foot can we use to dribble?" Demonstrate to the group.

- "How do our touches change depending on the space around us?"

- "Show me how to dribble like Messi"

- "Show me how to dribble like Ronaldo"

- "When keeping our head up, what opportunities are we looking for?" Space, defenders, team mates.

Main Activity (30 mins)

Organization:

- Players in pairs.

- One ball per pair.

Instructions:

- Players pass and move around area. On coaches call of "Battle" the player with the ball looks to maintain possession, while partner looks to steal. If player in possession is able to hold onto ball until coach calls "freeze" they are awarded 1 point. If partner is able to steal ball and keep possession, they are awarded 3 points. Play for 10-20 seconds before shouting freeze.

- Play 2 min rounds, with players keeping score after each freeze moment. Change partners for each round. Players should be partnered up with team mate of similar ability.

Coaching Points/Questions:

- Encourage players to keep the ball in motion at all times. Don't let the ball rest.

- "Assess you surroundings - do you have the option to take on your defender, or do you need to protect the ball?"

- Keep your body between the defender and the ball, with the foot furthest away from the defender in contact with the ball.

- Low body shape, with arm out to feel for defender.

Progression 1 (30 mins)

Progressions:

Player in possesion when coach calls "battle" can score on any of the 4 small goals. Defender looks to steal the ball, and can score on any goal except from the one their partner was closest to.

Progression 2 (30 mins)

Progressions:

Instead of coach calling "battle", players must come up with their own trigger to start the game. Example of this woould be after five passes between the pair, the player receiving the fifth pass can then go to goal.

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

Organization:

- Two small sided fields set up.

- 2v2 on each field.

Instructions:

- Goals are scored into the oppositions goal as standard (no goalkeepers).

- 2 points awarded if all players on attacking team are in the oppositions half of the field. 1 point awarded in all other cases.

- 2 min games then rotate teams.

Coaching Points/Questions:

- "How can you make your play less predictable and keep the ball away from the defender?"

- Shield the ball until you can identify the most effective way to penetrate - pass, dribble or shoot.

- Attacking mentality - create supporting angle in opposition half as quickly as possible.

Match (30 mins)

Organization:

-3 teams of 2 players.

-Mini goals

Instructions:

-2v2 rotating teams.

-First team to two goals, or two minute games. If tied, team on longest comes off.

-Dribble in or pass in on restarts.

Coaching Points/Questions:

- Emphasis on maintaining possession (individually or as a team) when under pressure.

- "What are your challenges in keeping possesion in a more game like environment?"

- "What can we do to overcome these challenges?"

Regressions/Progressions:

R: Increase the size of the goals.

P: 3v3
