Warm up (15 mins)

Organization:

Set up as above

Instructions:

GK plays into blue who look to play through the line of red and into the next four blues. If successful blues then look to play back through again for another point. Red are looking to intercept the ball and then play to their group of fellow whites. If ball leaves play, a new one is played in from the GK on the end line.

Coaching Points:

- Pressure (Quick, communicated, and making play predictable)

- Cover (angle, distance, screen the pass in behind)

- Balance (eliminate all gaps)

- Speed of movement from first defender to second defender as ball travels)

Progressions:

First to 5 goals wins.

Main Theme- Defending - Pressure, Cover, Balance (25 mins)

Organization:

1.Penalty area set up as shown

2.12 players (5 Attackers, 6 Defenders, 1 Goalkeeper) set up as shown

3.1 ball (Additional around the outside)

4. 4 Markers to indicate starting position

Instructions:

1.Defending players starts the activity with a diagonal pass to an attacking player between the markers

2.Two defenders then apply pressure starting next to the goal

3.The one attacker attempt, to beat the defenders to score on goal

4.If the defending players win the ball they attempt to pass to the coach who acts as a target between the counter goal

5.The process is the repeated with a pass being made from the next defender in line at the opposite side of the goal

6.Rotate players after set time interval

Coaching Points:

1.Deny penetration

2.Speed and angle of approach should force attacker into cover

3.Angle and distance of 2nd defender

4.Ability to change roles quickly and correctly

5.Correct moments to tackle or double team

6.Transition to attack

Progressions:

P – Increase the starting distance for the attacker by 10 yards creating more space to defend

R – Change the starting position of defender to the edge of the six yard box to allow them to pressure quicker

Conditioned Game (25 mins)

Organization:

1.Two 18 yard boxes set up as shown

2.12 players (5 Attackers, 5 Defenders, 2 Goalkeepers) set up as shown

3.1 ball (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1.Opposing goalkeeper starts the activity by passing the ball to the attacking player

2.As the pass is made the defenders now become active and apply pressure from the side of the goal

3.The attacker attempts to score

4.If the defender wins the ball they attempt to attempt to score on the attacker’s goal

5.If the ball leaves the area the activity starts with the opposing goalkeeper serving into their own player

6.Play until a goal is scored

7.Process is then repeated with the opposite goalkeeper serving to the other team

Coaching Points:

1.Speed and angle of approach should force attacker into cover

2.Angle and distance of 2nd defender

3.Ability to change roles quickly and correctly

4.Correct moments to tackle or double team

5.Communicate to 1st defender

6.Transition to attack

Progressions:

P – Attacking player starts the game by dribbling the ball into the area

P – Play 2v2

R – Limit attacking players touches
