Positional practice (20 mins)

Set up

Using half of a field, split into 4 channels using full width of field.

How to play

1v1 situation (+GK for shot or cross)

Ball is played up by attacking player then returned by defender. Players now play 1v1 in the channel area.

Rotation as follows –

1.Right full back channel and left centre back channel go at the same time.

2.Left full back channel and right centre back channel go at the same time.

If player goes past defender they shoot or cross the ball.

GK must be aware of both happening.

If defender wins the ball they pass to a target or drive over the line.

Once attackers have attacked, they rotate so they are now defenders

Progressions

Players now play 2v2 in the wider channel (one ball)

Rotation as follows (ensure its always blue vs red) –

1)Right full back and right centre back vs 2 attackers

2)Left full back and left centre back vs 2 attackers

Players can only play in their own channel (half field)

If player goes past defender they can shoot or cross for other player

If crossing, other defender focuses on marking attacker

If defenders win the ball they pass to target man or drive over the line

Player tasks

#2 #5

Can you force play away from goal

Can you deflect crosses away from goal

Can you intercept and play to target man

#3 #4

Force away from goal

Deflect shots or crosses

Passing practice (10 mins)

Main Moment - Defending

Key Principles - Prevent goalscoring opportunities

Team Task -

WHAT - Can we stop or prevent crosses into the box

WHO - Us GK, 2,3,4,5,6,8

Them - 9,11,7,10,8,6,4

WHERE - In the attacking third

WHEN - The ball is played wide

WHY - So we can prevent goal scoring opportunities for the opposition

SET UP

Create three boxes of 10 x 12m with a goal and gate at one end. Use four players in each box with lots of extra balls ready to use.

HOW TO PLAY

Passive defending for the first few turns and the attacker just dribbles the ball to the line.

The defending player passes to the attacker and then tries to win the ball. A pass into the small goal is 3 points and a dribble through the gate is 1 point.

The players switch ends after each turn.

PROGRESSION

Place a goal at the opposite end that the defender can pass into if they win the ball.
