Description

Block 1: Manipulating & Staying on the Ball

Topic 2: Running with the Ball (Team-Based Session)

  • Objective 1: Players should be looking run with the ball at their feet and keeping it under control
  • Objective 2: Players should be looking drive into space with a larger touch
  • Objective 3: Players should try an execute an action (shot or pass) after driving into space

Core Move Focuses for Block 1:

  • 2 Player: Wall Pass
  • 2 Player: Overlap

Skill Move Focuses for Block 1:

  • Step over
  • Drag Back/L Turn

  • V Cut

Technical Session:

  • Players should be split into a maximum of two groups of 10 on two separate pitches
  • The same session should be done simultaneously on both pitches

Warm-Up: Dribbling Corridor (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Players are to dribble up an down the corridor performing different skills and using different RWTB techniques up and down the corridor, performing a turn at each end of the corridor
  • Focus skills this block: Step Over, Drag Back/L Turn, Sole Role, V Cut

Progressions

  • Add defender(s) in the middle third (who are restricted within the middle third) who attempt to tackle anymore trying to go through the middle third

  • Add a pair (or two pairs) of defenders on the outside of the corridor who are looking to pass the ball to one another, which means the players dribbling up and down the corridor must avoid the incoming footballs
Coaching Points

  • Players varying between smaller and larger touches
  • Players keeping their heads up
  • Players playing at high tempo
  • Encourage players to try new skills/turns/movements even if they find it difficult
  • Look out for players who are struggling with the the technique the coach has asked the player to execute

Gate Dash and Score (15 mins)

Organisation

  • Players are set up in the 4 corners with 8 gates in the centre (2 for each colour) and 2 goals on either

    side

  • When the coach calls a colour, each player at the front of each corner will dribble through the gate of

    the colour called and in the opposite goal, before joining the back of the opposite corner

Progressions

  • Players must dribble through both gates of the same colour before • scoring (coach can be creative with this)

  • Players are in a race to see who scores first

  • On either side of the pitch, only have one player with the ball and the other without. On the coach’s call the attacker must dribble through one/two of the coloured gate(s) the coach calls whilst the defender tries to stop him

Coaching Points
  • Good technique whilst RWTB (laces, toes pointing down, etc)​

  • Keeping your head up when dribbling to avoid other players​

  • Vary between small and large touches when appropriate​

  • Drive through the gates​

  • Create an angle before shooting by shifting the ball across​

  • Challenge: Players should aim to do one skill before scoring​

  • Challenge: Players should aim to score within a time limit ​

  • Challenge: Players should only use their weaker foot

SSG with conditions (30 mins)

Organisation

  • An SSG (4v4 in the above example) with a few conditions that can be added in and out as when the coach wishes

  • Condition: All players must be in the opposition half when a team scores

  • Condition: Every time a player dribbles through one of the gates it is worth a point (this is the main condition that should be focused on)

  • Condition: Every core moved performed successfully (wall pass or overlap) is worth a point itself
  • Can be creative in terms of how to implement these conditions
