AIM: Improve application of basic defensive principles (and application).
Work on basics of pressure and cover. Shift to the edge of your team-mates’ zone to prevent penetrating passes.
COACHING FOCUS
Principle: Pressure, Cover, Balance, (Recovery), Communication
Sub-Principles:
ORGANISATION:
Time: Play 2-3 minute periods. switch teammates in last two zones with teammates in the two middle zones
Equipment: Cones spaced out to make 4x4 zones of approximately 6-10 yards between cones
Area: 4 x 6m x 6m.
Players: 2 groups of 4 players each/ 16 total (Also possible to do with 4 lines of 3)
LEARNING STRUCTURE & CONSTRAINTS
Ball service from coach into one of the end lines. Same colour teams aim to pass the ball through their opponent's lines. Scoring: Depending on ability, allow a point for each successful split pass, or every 2nd one.
Constraints:
1. Size of areas
2. Player/ Players allowed to invade their opponent's zone
3. Allow back pressure/ recovery to occur once ball is played past someone, to the adjacent zone only
4. Height of Pass: restrict height to knees, waist, shoulders, etc. to make defending easier / attacking harder
