Warm up shadow defending (10 mins)

Organization:

Have teams of 2. Have 4 grids or depending numbers adjust.

Instructions:

In this warm up exercise the players will learn the proper stand of defending. They will also shadow defend to get the proper repetition

Coaching Points:

Be low on your knees to have balance

Have strong tackling foot foward and balancing foot behind (Skate board position)

Have chest upright

Have good balance

Have the arm foward to give appropriate distance

Angle of approach

Progressions:

Have the players have a stutter step to unbalance opposition

Defending with Progressions (30 mins)

Organization:

Have two lanes or depending of numbers. Have two teams of equal numbers

Instructions:

Coaching Points:

1v1

-low on the knees

-have balance

-have arm to give distance

-pressure quickly but give proper distance

-strong leading foot to tackle the ball away

-have players defend one side and NOT twist and turn

1v2

-low on the knees

-give space and read the passing lane

-strong tackling to win the ball

-defend the space and player by positioning oneself in a good position

2v2

-brief introduction to press cover system

-player closest to the ball pressure

-second player is to cover the pressurer

-have a diagonal shape to not allow a split or through pass

1v2 (5 min each group) Total time 10 min

Conditioned game 3 goals (20 mins)

Organization:

Two channels that are 1v1 only. Have the middle for a 4v4 (depending on numbers) you could also add a neutral player. Have two teams of equal number and 1 ball

Instructions:

Players will have 3 goals to score on. The two that are wide will be on 1v1 the middle will be a 3v3 defending. The players will be able to pass to the lone foward that will hold the play and wait for support this will give time for the defending team to set up and defend the 3v3 situation.

Coaching Points:

have a press coverage

1v1 be low on the knees and have proper distance

not allowing a player to turn

angle body of approach to not give space behind

communication within players

P- Have a touch limit for the offensive players

R- Add a neutral player

Free Play (20 mins)

Organization:

Depending on the numbers, have two teams of equal numbers (have a neutral player if need it )

Yellow will be neutral

Instructions:

Free play. Have players play freely but if the players hold on to the ball too long have a touch restriction to bring out the defensive principles

Coaching Points:

Observe player defensive shape

Defensive body shape such as low on your knees have balance

pressure cover introduction

defend as a unit
