4v2 Rondo (15 mins)

Set Up: 12*12 grid. Supply of balls on the outside. Two set ups.

Players: 8 players per grid. 4 attackers along the outside. 2 defenders in the middle.

Description: Play 4v2 rondo. Rotate defenders every 2 minutes. Rotate attackers half way through.

Key Factors:

1. First defender - speed/angle of approach. Make play predictable. Proper body shape/balance.

2. Second defender - angle/distance of support. Play off the shoulder of the first defender.

3. Communication.

4. Decision making - who presses/who drops. Don't get split.

5. Arrive as the ball arrives.

6. Cues to press: bad touch, bad pass, bounce, indecision, etc.

Progression:

1. Add an attacker in the middle.

2. Allow outside attackers to enter the grid.

Questions: Who pressures the ball? Who offers support? What can I tell my teammate when supporting them? If first defender is beat, now what?

2v2 Defending (15 mins)

Set Up:

15*30 grid. Two different colored pinnies. Balls with servers on the sides. One small gate set up on each end line. Markers set up 5 yards from each end line.

Players:

Four players on each end line. Can adjust numbers where needed.

Description:

Each group of players is numbered 1-4. Server will call out two numbers and the players from each team with those numbers compete 2v2. Defenders can win the ball and attack the opponent's goal.

Key Factors:

1. Nearest defender to the ball pressures as the ball travels to the attacker.

2. Speed and angle of approach of the first defender. Show inside where cover is.

3. Slow down and show restraint.

4. Covering player - proper angle and distance.

5. Communication between defenders.

6. Proper cues to press - bad touch, bad pass, negative play, attacker facing own goal, etc.

Progression:

Servers become active by supporting the team in possession (3v2). Allow for 1-2 touches.

Questions:

1. Where do we force the attacker?

2. What happens when the ball switches attackers?

3. What happens when the attackers choose to run with the ball?

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): 6v6 Zonal Game

6v6 Zonal Game (15 mins)

Set Up: 3 zones, 15*25 each with 3 yard goals at each end (total of six). Supply of balls with the server.

Players: total of 12 players split into 3 zones (2v2 in each). No goalkeepers. 4 players rest.

Description: Server plays the ball into the attackers (red) to start. Defenders are restricted to their zone. One attacker can roam into another zone, when their team is in possession of the ball. No possession = no roaming. Either team scores by passing the ball through the small goals.

Progression:

1. Allow attackers to roam freely, so long as there is at least one attacker in each zone.

2. One defender is allowed to leave their zone.

Key Factors:

1. Nearest defender to the ball pressures as the ball travels to the attacker.

2. Speed and angle of approach of the first defender. Show inside where support is.

3. Slow down and show restraint.

4. Covering player - proper angle and distance.

5. Communication between defenders.

6. Proper cues to press - bad touch, bad pass, negative play, attacker facing own goal, etc.

King's/Queen's Court (100 mins)

Set Up: Quarter field at Pine Glen. Balls along the outside.

Players: 3 teams of 5 players (one team will have a subsitute). 5 outfield and 1 goalkeeper for each team on field. Two active teams; third team rests.

Description: Play 6v6 (including GK) - King's / Queen's court. All regular rules apply, including retreat line. Team that scores stays and quickly attacks the other way (after scoring). Resting team jumps on the field to defend. Team that got scored on leaves the field.

Key Factors:

All coaching points from the session - focus on delay and support. Look for players to get in behind the ball and make the right decision as to when to press and when not to press.
