Objective: Defending Opposition Freekick
Goal: Successfully defend opposition freekick with an attacking mindset to clear the ball towards our striker to create an attacking opportunity and establish offside line + defensive line of confrontation.
Setup & Roles:
Depending on how far the freekick is, either 3 or 4 players in the wall. Players are man marking.
Striker is set up in the middle to challenge clearance with the goal of advancing the ball
GK's role is to set the wall and be proactive in claiming the ball in the box
Defenders are alert for a cross and rebound if the freekick is on goal, looking to clear up the field or out for a throw-in, not a corner.
Coaching Points:
Communication
Man marking
Defensive positions
Awareness for rebounds
Body positioning to win headers
Sprint to create offside line

Objective: Attacking Corner
Goal: Succesfully execute designed runs to create scoring opportunity.
Setup & Roles:
- Player is set up for a short corner option to play fast. Secondary run is a quick sprint to the top of the box for any rebounds.
- Player is applying pressure on the keeper but not close enough to create a foul. Goal is to cause chaos around the keeper making him lose focus.
Remaining players are set up at the top of the 6 yard box for a short corner run to draw out the defense right before the ball is served.
4 players (Best headers on team: CB's, #6, #9) line up at the top of the box with designed runs. Target player is at the top of the box and is the last runner in.
- #6 player runs back post.
- CB player runs slightly past penalty spot.
- #9 runner near post at the edge of the 6 yard box for flick if it's a poor corner.
- CB Last runner is the target player. He makes his run as soon as the penalty spot runner runs with the goal of losing his marker in the chaos.
- Corner kick taker is looking for our target player with an ideal landing area between penalty spot and 6 yard box.
- Defensive we're always one man up in our rest defense. Second defender is ready for clearance ball to shoot or chip back in.
Coaching Points:
Communication
Effective runs with intensity

Objective: Attacking Freekick
Goal: Successfully execute designed runs to create scoring opportunity from a set piece.
Setup & Roles:
For our set pieces that are within scoring range, we have 4 attacking options.
Free kicker has 4 options
- Option A is a shot on goal
- Option B is service into the box aiming for back post with a header on goal or across the face of goal for another runner, ideally the player who starts off in an offside position who will become onside when the ball is played.
- Option C is a combination pass if the defense drops to quickly when the players make runs or the ref whistles. A player is positioned in an offside position with the goal of drawing the defenders back to hold his line. This option must be judged by both closest player and the freekick taker.
- Option D is a quick freekick when the opposition is not set up and the offside player is temporarily onside when the opposition is trying to set up.
Players are set up in a group to cause chaos and lose their markers.
- One player runs far 18 yard box for missed crosses.
- One player runs to PK spot
- One player delays run to after cross is sent in to get header that is put across goal
- Offside player runs near post for header across goal
- One runner moves to the top of the 18 yard box
- Free kick taker quickly crashes box for a rebound
- Target player runs across the far 18 yard box runner in an attempt to lose marker. Ideal option is header to back post or header to teammate across the face of goal.
Defensively, we establish rest defense with one man up. 2nd defender is ready for rebound to either shoot or chip back in.
Coaching Points:
Communication
Effective runs with intensity
Challenging header
Precise cross to target player
Bait defenders to jump to bring offside player in to play
Finishing with limited touches
Rest defense

Defending Corner
Objective: Defending Opposition Corner
Goal: Successfully defend opposition corner with an attacking mindset to clear the ball towards our striker and create an attacking opportunity.
Setup & Roles:
1 player on the front post. Secondary role is to follow the runner if the opposition player runs for a short corner
3 players set up on the 6 yard box in a zone position, covering the length of the goal. Role for them is to be the first to the ball at all moments
5 players man mark quickly and are tight on their opponents.
GK's role is organize quickly and point out key players making sure no one is left unmarked.
Striker sets up on the side of the ball because most clearances come out from the side the corner is taken.
Once the ball is cleared and we're successful in finding our striker, move the line quickly up preventing a follow up ball (offside line) and support the attacker in creating a counterattack.
