Three Box Possession (15 mins)

Organisation

Create three connected grids- each 25x25yds.

Split players into two teams x5 with a neutral player.

The game is scalable. Add numbers to teams and make the grids bigger.

Instructions

play starts in the first box with 5v5+1.

After 4 or more passes the team in possession can play a forward pass into the second box for a teammate to run onto. Both entire teams follow at that point. No member of either team can enter the connected box until the ball is passed into it. If the team in possession can make a further 4 more passes, they play into the third box. If they score 4 more passes in the third box, they score a point. If the team in possession in the second or third box lose possession, the game starts over with the team which just won possession, having possession in the end box.

Progressions

1. Add a further neutral player.

2. Players restricted to two touch - then one touch.

3. Decrease or increase the number of passes allowed before the ball can be switched.

Target Man Possession (15 mins)

Organisation

Create two 25x25 yd grids, with a 10 yard wide channel between the grids.

Split players into two teams - 6 White and 6 x Red, with a neutral player.

Instructions

Players start in the first box with 5v5+1 in the first grid, leaving a player each in the furthest grid as illustrated.

After four or more consecutive passes the team in possession can play a forward pass into the target player in the next grid. Each team will then leave one player back as the remaining players follow the pass into the next grid.

The target player holds the ball up and attempts to combine with his team mates to make four ot more consecutive passes. The game continues to go back and forth after four or more consecutive passes are made.

Keep play efficient and fast.

Coaching Points

Movement

Quick, accurate passing.

Target player must be strong on the ball - correct body position and use of arms, clenched fist etc to create a rigid frame to screen the ball, keeping the ball as far away as possible from the opponent.

Transition must be quick to give the target player immediate support.

Progressions

1. Add additional neutral player

2. All player 2 touch (then 1 touch)

3. Neutral unlimited touches

4. Decrease or increase the number of passes allowed before the ball can be switched.

6v6 Zone 14 Phase Play (20 mins)

Organisation

Create a pitch using full width less 10 yards and 10 yards shorter than the half way line. Place two mini goals onm the end line.

Create an area representing Zone 14 - in this case, the area between the back 4 and the MF - 'between the lines'.

Offside rule applies - but - the offside line is at least equal to the edge of Zone 14 closest to the goal.

Instructions

White team play in a 2-3-1 formation - Red team play in a 4-2 formation.

Only one White player at a time can enter zone 14. The Red team is not allowed to enter inside zone 14.

White team seek to score as usual.

If Red team gain possession, they have 5 passes in which to score in either of the mini goals.

Game restarts with coach playing the ball to White No.6 each time.

Coaching points

Attackers who can pick the ball up in the space between the back 4 and Midfield, will be able to penetrate the Defence by passing, shooting and even dribbling. Players that play in between the lines of opponents cause them many marking and team shape problems.

Progressions

1. White team players can only enter zone 14 to collect a pass.

2. White team players in Zone 14 have 3 secs only in which time to either pass, dribbble or shoot. Encourage players to follow up any shot for a rebound. Award 3 goals for a goal scored from a shot from Zone 14, 2 goals for a follow up and 1 goal for any other type of goal.

Split players into two teams - 6 white and 7 Red (including GK).

8 v 6 Zone 14 Phase Play (20 mins)

Organisation

As before, except, widen the pitch to full width and introduce 2 x White LB/RB to play as wingbacks - adding width to the attack.

Instructions

As previously, except encourage positional play of wing backs.

Coaching Points

Encourage LB/RB to play high and wide to draw defenders.

To create space, if LB makes a run forward, can LMF (11) run deep to fill the space and receive the ball from White No.6 in order to start the attack? If Red RB doesn't follow White No.2, can White No.6 play a ball over the top to him?

Progressions

1. Lengthen the pitch to a full half pitch and introduce two further Red players - in a 4-2-1-1 - so now 8v8.

2. Remove Zone 14 but encourage White players to play between the lines.
