Screen 1 (5 mins)

Set Up -

Only go when you are at the front and from the coaches whistle.

1 point if you sprint through your colored gate directly opposite you

3 points if you sprint through the opponents colored gate.

As soon as you sprint through a gate, a player from the opposite team will go that you need to then try and tag to stop them. Quick transition from attacker to defender.

To Think About

Have to stay switched on from transition from sprinter to tagger.

Competition - Do you try and get 1 point or 3?

Where do you try and tag the opponent? (Shut down the space / Get high)

Sprint to then slow feet down, if you just sprint you make it easier for the attacker to change direction.

Screen 2 (15 mins)

Set Up -

Same as previous tag game except now each player has a ball. Once they drive through one of the gates they must leave their ball for the quick transition into the new defender.

If the defender wins the ball, someone from their team must run into the white square, if the defender can then pass the ball into his team mate in the white square after winning the ball back, 5 Points are awarded.

To Think about

High Intensity

Transition from attacker to defender, Stay Switched On!

Knowing who is at the front of the line

Disregarding ball after being the attacker.

Coaching Points

  • Can we block off the space behind us by pressuring / winning the ball back as high up as possible.
  • Would we rather the attacker got 1 point or 3, How do we show them one way?
  • Curve of run to suggest one way.
  • 'Surfer position' (Jockey),
  • Slowing Feet down to cause the attacker to make a decision / Delay (How and why?),
  • Triggers to then win the ball back. EG - loose touch, cornered, off balance or last resort.
  • Intensity / Ball Speed to play forward once winning it back.
Technical - Different types of touches of the ball, manipulation of the ball, body language and positioning as as focused on above. Slowing feet down to delay and effective pressure within tackle. Weight / type of pass if you play into white square. Tactical - Winning the ball high up the grid, showing them in which direction? Weaker foot / 1 point. Physical - High intensity, strength, balance, speed and agility needed within tackles to be successful. Psychological / Social - Competitive between the 2 teams, Remembering the transition and staying switched on, Communication for team mate to step into white square - ' Do Not get Beat'.

Screen 3

Set up -

2v2, Both teams start by their line, play starts by one team fizzing the ball into the other team then having to try and win it back. Have to drive through your opponents line in control of the ball in order to get a point.

Coaching points

  • Nearest man presses, team mate offers cover / balance by positioning defending the space or other attacker.
  • If you are the nearest man that presses, where do you show the attacker? (Away from support / onto weaker foot / away from danger)
  • Positioning for If you are the cover and balance, if you get too tight they will play behind, if you stay too far away they have more time to receive and play the ball.
  • Winning the ball back high up the grid to protect the space, all other coaching points mentioned in screen 1 & 2.
