Description

Recap and review last week's skill focus - the clip hit.

**Players should not lift their stick above waist height, before or after connecting with the ball. Please continue to stress this.

**They should only hit a ball if they are in space.

COACHING POINTS:

  • Hands together with a V shape between thumb and index finger down the edge of the stick.
  • Hands halfway down the stick, between the top of the stick and the end of the grip.
  • Left foot is level with the ball.
  • The wrist and elbow move to hit the ball.
  • Head is in line with the ball, not over it.

SET UP

  • One catcher.
  • Every other player has a ball.
  • Define a playing area.
  • Players dribble their balls around the playing area.
  • If they are tagged by the catcher, they must stand with their feet apart and their ball in front of them.
  • Another player can 'free' them by pushing the stuck player's ball through their legs.
  • Encourage a light tap on the shoulder to tag a player, make sure they are not pushing or shoving.
  • If players are not being freed by their teammates, add a 'magic' player. This player does not have their own ball and cannot be caught. Their role is to free other players.

SET UP

  • Define the playing area. Eg, in the D.
  • Every player has a ball.
  • 1) Moving with the ball - focus on stick, body, ball positions.
  • 2) Change direction on your command.
  • 3) Swap balls with another player. Give them a target number of passes, Eg, Swap balls with 5 different players, or swap balls with everyone in the group.

  • Take balls away from just under half the group.
  • Give them a cone / marker to stand next to.
  • Players with a ball - pass to a player by a cone and then take their place.
  • Once a player by a cone receives a ball, they then dribble to a different player on a cone to make a pass.

SET UP

  • 5 v 3.
  • The ball cannot travel through the box in the middle.
  • The team of 5 starts with the ball. Their aim is to get the ball to a player on their team over the 23 line.
  • The team of 3 is aiming to win possession and score in the goal.
FOCUS AREAS
  • Play the ball wide out of defence.
  • Attack wide.
  • Look to transfer the ball to disorganise the defence and create space.
  • Maintain possession.

Shooting Competition

SET UP

  • Mark out a line in front of the goal - players need to shoot before this line.
  • Each player takes a turn, carrying (dribbling) the ball into the D and taking a shot using a clip hit.
  • Discourage players from stopping the ball before hitting it. Encourage them to adjust their feet and hand position to get ready to hit the ball as it rolls in front of them.
(Using a football goal is fine if you don't have a hockey goal).

Small Sided Game - Multiple Goals

SET UP

  • Two teams.
  • Split pitch in half with goals for each team in each half. Eg. 4 goals in each half.
  • The blue/white team is scoring in the red goals. The orange team is scoring in the yellow goals.
  • If the blue/white team starts with the ball, the orange team cross over to defend. Play only takes place in one half of the pitch at a time.
  • If the blue/white team scores in any of their goals, they get a point and then it's the orange team's turn.
  • If the orange team intercepts, play transfers to the other half of the pitch with the orange team aiming to score.
IS IT WORKING?

Yes - The attacking team is successful in scoring goals.Reduce the number of goal options that they have.

No - The defending team successfully intercepts repeatedly.Reduce the number of defenders in each round to create 4 v 2, for example.

Keep teams small to encourage lots of touches on the ball and lots of goals scored.

Set up multiple games for teams to rotate every few minutes as a mini tournament.
