Session Detail
The ball starts in the area 3 v 2 + 1, with the objective of playing to the central player's back foot as their hips are open, thus allowing them to play forward. Once this action has happened the central player can play forward and the four players can combine to score. The practice then resets in that same area with one defender moving to that area to recreate a 3 v 2, attacking the other way.
Coaching Points
- Using your back foot to play forward (BP)
- Quality of pass (BP)
- Blocking passing lines (BPO)
- Angle of approach (BPO)
Progression(s)
- Make area smaller
- Allow the opposite defender to press the central player on the travel of the ball

Session Detail
Play starts from the coach/server who plays a ball into the 4 v 2; the two red players within this area tasked with blocking passing lines to the central midfielder, therefore, it is important that the ball is moved effectively to disorganise the opposition. The midfielder can receive the ball and take their first touch out of the square or they can receive and dribble forward to create a 5 v 3 to the goal. If the red team win possession at any stage they are tasked to try and play back to the coach.
Coaching Points
- Ball speed (BP)
- Creating space (BP)
- Blocking passing lines while pressing (BPO)
Progression(s)
- Allow the two defenders from the original 4 v 2 to move back

Progress through the series of passing and receiving drills in the picture; see details below:
1) Players are situated an equal distance from the middle cone and pass back and forward, the player receiving the ball but move sideways and receive the ball with their back foot, taking their first touch across the line of the cone and passing with their second touch.
2) This then progresses to the same activity but now in the form of a triangle; encourage a split of time where they are using their left foot, then their right foot.
3) This then progresses further into a square; from here you can begin to introduce recognition of triggers for movements.
4) The square is continued but now movements are introduced from the the receiving player; see screen 4 for an example of high to low.
Coaching Points
- Movement to create space
- Ready body shape
- Body shape to play with your first touch
Progression(s)
