Start positions from GK

-Outside CBs split to outside the box

-Central CB holds edge of box

Pattern 1 (10 mins)

Pattern

- Ball starts with GK

- Central CB holds space

- WBs stay wide to create width

- Ball side CDM moves inside to take marker away

- Opposite CDM moves away from play to cause marker a problem and free up more space centrally

- Ball side 10 drops down side on to receive pass from CB

- Opposite 10 pulls away to play either side of opposition CDM

- CF stays high to potentially provide threat in behind the defence

- Ball gets played into 10 and they now have options

- Could feed a pass to overlapping WB who can then drive forward and look to provide a 3v2 scenario on the outside with CF and no10

- 10 could turn and look to switch play

- They have direct switch on to opposite WB

- They have a pass to the other no10 who has pulled away

- Or they could go direct into CF

- Should they play to opposite 10 then the play can be switched to WB or a slide ball in behind defence to CF could also be an option

- As ball is shifted into no10, opposite CB tucks around to tighten up the back 3

- CDM covers to stop a potential counter attack should we lose the ball

- WBs have licence to go forward to provide width and support the attack

- Both 10s have licence to make the box, 1 CDM to pick up loose balls that get cleared

What if's?

- What if the pass is not on to the no10 from CB because winger is cutting it off? Then the ball can be directly played on the outside into the WB to drive into space

- What if opposition CDM comes across to stop ball being played easily into 10? This could potentially open up a clipped pass from CB into opposite no10 who should be free to receive the ball should they be playing between the lines and picking up space in front of the back 4

Pattern 2 (20 mins)

Start positions

-Slight alteration; left sided WB plays even higher

- Central CB comes wider to split other side of the penalty area

- Left sided CB starts in left back position

- CDMs start slightly higher to create space to move into

Ball starts with GK

- GK plays into CB

- 2 touches to play ball into CDM who has dropped down into space in front of defence

- Pass must be safe side into CDM who can play ideally in one touch around the corner into outside CB, may need two touches

- CB has options moving forward, they can either play straight down line into WBs feet

- They have the option of two 10s playing either side of their CDM so can either play a simple pass into nearest 10 or look to break a line by playing into opposite 10 who can then turn and switch play or look to slide the ball into CF who stays high to threaten in behind defence

What if?

- Opposition squeeze the space, and don't allow us to play the ball to CB to start pattern? An aerial ball into wide areas for WB or wide CB to control could be the option

- GK could also look to clip the ball into one of the 10s who can look to control, kick has to be either side of CDM in order to avoid a loss of possession

- Another option could be rotation in MF where CDM rolls out and 10 drops in to receive the ball straight from GK to turn and play from there
