Passing Option 1 (10 mins)

Organization

- Split the players in to 3-4 groups

- Create 6-7 Holes and  T's

- Place obstacles between holes

Activity

- Players will work their way around the course attempting to complete it in as few shots as possible

 - To complete the hole the players have to hit the cone that represents the hole

 - If the ball hits or lands in any of the obstacles 1 shot is added to the players total

This session should be a fun way to develop passing techniques and allow the players to figure out the best ways to strike the ball. We can have one round where players can use their weaker foot only, their laces only, the inside of their foot only, etc. In each instance can we ask a couple of questions on why this is or is not a good option? What do we need to do to make this technique work?

Passing Option 2

Organization

- Create 2 x 2 yard gates 5 yards apart (1)

- Centrally, place 2 cones 1 yard apart, 10 yards in front of the two gates (2)

- Complete the same setup twice

- Split the group in half with each half getting their own setup of the activity

- Split the groups in half again with one half starting at (1) and the other half at (2)

Activity

 - The player with the ball at (1) will move the ball between their feet

 - The player at (2) will jump over the cones in different ways (1 foot, two feet etc)

 - Whenever the player with the ball is ready they will pass the ball out

 - This will be the trigger for the player at (2) to step on to the ball and pass through one of the two gates first time

 - Every time the team gets a ball through the gate they get a point

 - After every go the players will switch ends

 - First team to get to a certain number or first team that scores the most in a certain time wins

Progression

- Once they have passed the ball 1 becomes the defender and attempts to stop the pass going through the gate

In this session coaches will work with the players to consider weight off pass from 1, and technique on the first time pass from 2. Although this looks like a simple task it's relatively complex for the younger players to get all the necessary movements to be successful right. Be patient and ask them questions to pull out the answers. This will also be fun with the competition side added in.

Passing Option 3

Organization

- Create a 5 yard goal

- Place a 10 x 10 square 15 yards from the goal

- Place a cone 5 yards closer to goal from in line with the top right corner of the box

- 1 player (Attacker) will start in the box

- A 2nd player (Defender) will start at the top corner of the box closest to the goal

Activity

 - The player in the box will move to create a space to receive the ball

- The player with the ball will pass to the player without and then run around the outside of the  cone closer towards the goal attempting to stop the shot/pass

- The player with the box will attempt to receive and get the ball in to the goal before the defender can get back to prevent the goal

- Every time the pass gets the ball into the goal they get a point

- Each player in the pair will have 5 attempts at each role the player with the most points at the end of the game wins

Progressions

 - Change the point from where the original pass is played from the back right to the front right to make the challenge harder for the defending player

 - Adjust the distances to make success and challenges both possible

 - Give the attacker a limited number of touches

This exercise is designed to get the players thinking about how they receive the ball, what makes it easiest to pass the ball to the target and how they can do this quickly. The coaches job here is to ask questions, for example does it make it harder if when we receive the ball we cannot see the goal? Where would we want to take our touch to make it as easy as possible? Can I play a mini pass to myself that would set me up for a quick finish?

Passing Option 4

Organization

- Create a 15 x 15 area

- Place a ball on top of a cone at the centre of the area

- Split the players equally between the  corners of the area

- All players have a ball

Activity

 - 4 Players will play at any one time

 - On the coaches shout or trigger the players will set off clockwise to dribble their ball around the square

 - Once the players have reached their starting point the will attempt to pass their ball off the target ball in the centre of the square, the player that hits the ball gains a point for their

 - If the ball is not hit, no team gets points OR the coach can rule to give the point to the team that was closest

Progression

- Players must use a specific foot to dribble and to play the pass

The focus of this session is two fold, firstly we are looking for players to be able to run with the ball and manipulate the ball at speed in order to get back to their starting point first. We are also looking for players to then be able to pass accurately in order to hit the target. This activity and one that with a little excitement added in by the coach will keep the players engaged.

Passing Option 5

Organization

- Place 2 cones 10 yards apart

- Place a goal 10 yards from the outside of each cone

- 10 yards directly in front of the cones create a 5x5 box

- 5 yards directly in front of the box have a player with a ball

- Attacking player in the box

- Defending player between the 2 cones

Activity

 - The Player with the ball will play the pass to the player in the box

 - As the ball is passed the player between the cones must touch one or the other with their hand

 - The attacking player will have 3 seconds to score from receiving the ball

 - The player that started in between the cones will defend the goals

 - Split the players evenly in to teams giving each team the chance to attack for 2 mins

Progression

- Adjust the distance of the cones depending on the success of the attacking player

The focus of this activity is two fold, firstly can the attacker have the awareness to check which way the defending player moves, secondly can the attacker take a touch in to space that allows them to get in to a goal scoring space before the defender can recover. The coach should be asking the attackers how they can make it easier for themselves, body shape? First touch? Checking shoulders?

Passing option 6

Organization

 - Create a 12 x 12 area

 - In the middle of that area create a 3 x 3 area

 - Start with one player on each line of the outside square

 - One player starts on the outside of the middle square

 - The outside players have a ball between the 4

Activity

 - The outside players are attempting to pass the ball through the middle square to a team mate as often as possible

 - The player on the outside of the middle square is guarding the square attempting to stop the pass through

 - Each player will take a turn being the central player

 - Set a target for the outside players to reach in regard to passing through the middle square

 - If the target is achieved the central player will do a small forfeit and if it is not the outside players will do the forfeit

Progression

- A first time pass through the square is worth double

The main focus for this session is to develop an awareness of space and time prior to receiving the ball. We are looking for the players to make the decision of whether they are able to get the ball through the central square or if they need to move the ball again to give someone else the opportunity. Questions to be asked to the players revolve around how we can create the space to play through? how many touches do we need to take? how do we move the central player?

Passing option 7

Organization

 - Split the players in to groups of 4

 - Each groups gets an arc of  cones with 1-2 yards between each cones

 - One player starts in the centre of the

 - The other 3 players place themselves one between each pair of cones

 - 2 of the outside players start with a ball

Activity

 - The central player will be on their toes and ready to receive the ball

 - One of the outside players will play the ball in and the central player will take one touch to control before then playing out to the player without a ball

 - The central player will repeat this process for 30 - 45 seconds receiving from a player with the ball to then find the player without

 - To keep the tempo high make the activity a competition between groups as to who can make the most passes within the alotted time.

Progressions

 - 1 touch pass out

 - The ball is thrown in and has to controlled to the ground before being passed back out to the free player.

This activity is all about awareness, knowing where the spare player is and then being able to adjust receiving body shape, first touch, and quality of pass to make sure the ball finds it's target. Players should be encouraged to figure out the small details in order to make the process quicker and efficient, this may include promoting the use of both feet.

Passing option 8

Organization

- Setup 3 cones in a horizontal row all with balls on top of them 3 yards apart (total lines distance 15 yards)

- Create a line 5 yards in front of the balls and then another 3 yards in front and then another 5 yards in front.

- The defenders will start at either the side of the area inline with the first line, one with a ball

- The attackers will start between lines 2 and 3 without a ball

Activity

 - The defender will pass the ball to one of  the attackers

 - The attacker will then attempt to control and work together with team mate to knock one of the balls off the cones

 - The defenders will work along their line attempting to stop the pass off the cone

Progression

- Limit the time the attackers have to hit the balls

- Add more balls to hit depending on the success

The focus for this session is the quality and  accuracy of pass, patience, and working combinations to create space to finish. Are the players taking the shot when it presents itself? Are the attackers moving the ball quickly in combination? Is there any movement between the 2 attackers?

Passing option 9

Organization

- Setup a 12 x 12 area with a 2x2 area in the centre marked out with cones

- Place one player on each of the outside lines of the big square and have one player start centrally but not inside the small square

- Start with 3 of the players on the outside of the area having a ball

Activity

 - The player in the middle of the area moves to receive the ball from one of the players on the outside of the area

 - Once they have received the ball they are then looking to find the player on the outside who does not have a ball

 - The player in the middle repeats this process for 45 seconds before an outside player replaces them

 - Once all players have been in the middle the first player will go back in and begin the competition round

 - The 2nd round will be which player can make the most passes within the allotted time.

 - The receiving player is always looking to receive in different ways but always protecting the ball from the defender (Central Square)

 -

Progression

- Central player has two touch maximum

The focus for this session is on receiving body shape, first touch and awareness before receiving the ball. Can we get the players thinking about what's next in order to create a body shape that will take them where they want to go, and a first touch that makes it possible to find the free player with their 2nd touch.

Passing option 10

Organization

- Place 3 balls on cones 5 yards apart along a horizontal line

- Place a line 5 yards out from the cones

- Attacking players will start 20 yards from the balls, centrally. (1)

- The first defending player will start 7 yards in front of the attacker facing them with a ball (2)

- The waiting defending players will wait too the side of the field with a ball each (3)

- The 2nd attacking player (4) will start midway between (1) and (2) on a diagonal

- The 2nd defending player (5) will be between the balls and the 5 yard line

Activity

 - The activity will start with the defending player (2) passing the ball to the attacking player (1)

 - The defending player will then close down the attacking player

 - As the attacker is closed down they will play a 1-2 with the 2nd attacker before then attempting to knock a ball off a cone while the 2nd defender attempts to protect the balls.

 - The attacker (1) will then join the line of defenders and the defender (2) will join the line of attackers

- The 2nd attacker and defenders will be changed intermittently

Progression

- To increase success rate add more balls on cones

- To increase challenge take away balls on cones

The focus for this session is highlight a situation that may happen in a game. We are looking for the players to understand that we are drawing the defender in to create space behind them. What angles do we need to make the 1-2 work? Can we play 1st time? Once in the position to hit the balls off cones are we are able to keep moving while also looking up to see where the best passing option is?
