Area:
Use half a pitch with goals at either end. Create 2 channels from edge of penalty area to halfway line as shown. Create possesion box as shown by shaded area
Equipment:
Cones or dics, bibs balls
Objective:
Split players into 2 teams and 1 neautral goal keeper who is defending the gaol againts both teams. The prractice starts with a possesion based game in the shaded box. when 3 passes are completed the team in possesion can break out and have an attack at the goal. the team out of possesion have to drop back and try to defend the goal. The defending team are not allowed to go into the channels unless a player in possesion in that channel has been on the ball for more than 3 seconds. Then they can engage. Once the defending team wins possesion, clears the ball or the ball goes out of play then the practice is reset with possesion game in the possesion game area. The coach can either give possesion to the team they chose, leave a ball in the area for both teams to try and get to first etc.
Progression:
Encourage players out of possesion to delay, deny to allow team mates to recover into the defensive shape as required.
Identify in transition early that possesion is about to be lost as a trigger to drop back and communicate with team mates to drop.

Area:
Use half a pitch with goals at either end. Create 2 channels from edge of penalty area to halfway line as shwon.
Equipment:
Cones or dics, bibs balls
Objective:
Play a normal game ibut when the team lose and the ball is in your defensive half we want them to recover into a defensive shape, the width of the penalty area or inside the cones. although there is no restricton on and the team out of possesion and they can go into the channels, we want to allow the team in possesion to use the width but recover to a 1-3-2 formation when out of possesion to have good protection infront of the goal keeper to make it difficult to penerate. Once possesion is won back from the blue team the roles are reversed and they become the team in possesion and the reds need to recover into a defensive shape the width of the penalty area in a 1-3-2. Encourage the team in possesion to play out wide and use the space.
Progression:
The coach will introduce a ball and shout "play". the original ball is dead and they players have to react to the new ball in play. This will help simulate turn overs of possesion but also for the coach to keep replay situations until a player or players learn and identify that they need to recover into defensive shape and not run back to help.
Key points:
Encourage players out of possesion to delay, deny to allow team mates to recover into the defensive shape as required.
Identify in transition early that possesion is about to be lost as a trigger to drop back and communicate with team mates to drop.

Transition box to box (10 mins)
Area:
Create 2 outlined boxes with roughly the same sized area of space for transition between them. This changes slightly depending on number of players in each box at the start.7m x 7m for 6 players in each box, 6m x 6m for 5 players in each box and 5m x 5m for 4 players in each box.
Equipment:
Cones, discs or poles, balls
Objective:
You have 4 players passing the ball between each other with one in the middle trying to win the ball. When a player loses the ball or the ball goes out of the square, the player that loses the ball becomes a defender and runs to the opposite box. The other box are replicating the same. If the player hasn't won the ball when the player from the other box arrives then they both press as a 2 in the same box. When possesion is lost, that player runs down to the other box to be a defender and the player that just arrived stays and is the defender in the middle. The original defender now becomes one of the players in possesion.Whilst a box does not have a defender the other players pass and move in the area trying to record as may sucsessfull passes as possible.
