Warm-up (20 mins)

Organization

Set-up grid of 25x20 yds.

Implementation

Half with ball, half without - players passing & receiving on the go using a variety of passes. Communicate time, man-on and turn.

- start with the ball on the ground (variety of passes)

- move to players having ball in hands, toss to partner and partner uses laces to play back. Tosser receives with their body and then dribbles away. Eventually picks the ball back up and goes again.

Coach walks around with different coloured cones in hands to have players scan and shout.

Progression

- assign specific player to deliver aerial ball only

- have receiving player touch the instep of the foot they are about to receive with prior to receiving

- have player scan and call out the name of the player behind them or coach behind them or say no one

- assign specific player to only play 2 player combination passes

Coaching Points

- communication (man-on, time, turn)

- receiving side on, scanning, positive first touch

- weight of pass, pace of pass, accuracy of pass (certain foot)

- pass to space vs pass to feet

Back to net shooting

Organization

Set-up a net, 2 cones about 6yds away. Then approx 3 yds behind that, have 2 cones about 6yds apart.

Instructions

PA rolls ball out of feet, which sets off PC to move laterally to touch the left or right cone. PA then plays to PB. PB is side-on and scans behind to see which cone PC went to, and looks to open up the opposite way. PB then sequences into a strike on net.

Coaching Points

- body shape when receiving

- scanning prior to receiving

- inside/outside foot first touch

- prep touch - quick peak - eye on the ball - follow-through

- technical striking skills

Technical Shooting (15 mins)

Organization

Players are separated into 2 teams with 1 keeper in each net. Set up cone to run to in middle of pitch and a box to receive near keeper

Instruction

On 'Go' - 1st player in both lines runs to red cone, and back pedals into key box as a defender would receive off GK. Player then takes a positive first touch and runs with the ball at speed down the line. Race between both players to shoot/score first. Game goes quickly!

Coaching Points

- positive first touch with back foot

- longer strides when running wtih the ball

-  when ready to shoot - have a peak for GK position, look down at ball and follow through

- laces, ankle locked, toe down, middle of ball

- PREP touch - last angled touch before shot

King Louie

Organization

Set-up 2nd 18yd box on top of first with 2 big nets on either sides.

designated GKers with balls beside both nets

Instruction

The ball is first distributed by a GK (no hands) and is passed until a clear shooting opportunity is available. Players are able to shoot from any where inside their own half. If the ball goes out of play, restart with the GK, who distributes the ball to a teammate. Teams try to get off shot as soon as possible

Coaching Points

- Shooting mentality- Can I shoot?

- Encourage lots of shots, but decision making....low vs high percentage

- Body shape to shoot. ½ turned or facing forward to receive the ball.

- Part of foot and part of ball (accuracy vs power)

- Follow through. Eye on the ball.

- Shoot across the GK

- Creating space and initial dispersal (to provide better distribution options).
