Circle Passing with Fitness (15 mins)

Circle Passing with Fitness

Have the group go in a circle and pass to one another. All passes muct be 1 touch and the ball can't leave the circle or stop. When a player passes the ball they must run to the designated cone and then come back to the grid. If they do this too slowly, the players in the grid won't have someone to pass to and the drill will die. Goal is to do this for 3-5 minutes without a mistake. Talk to the kids about their focus and attention to detail with thier passes. The weight and direction of the pass, communication and eye contact.

Eliminating the opponent with a wall pass (20 mins)

Organization:

5 Players minimum with the area being as large or small based on the age/ability of the players involved.

Starting Point:

Player A, plays OUT to Player B, who plays BACK to Player A.

Player A then plays a THROUGH pass to C, accelerates past Player D, to receive a wall pass and plays a 1-2 pass back to Player C and takes his/her position.

Player C then repeats the passing sequence the opposite direction by passing OUT to Player D, who passes BACK to Player C, who then plays THROUGH to the next Player in the line.

Action:

Once the players have learned the sequence and over come the learning curve, the goal is to play as many passes on their first touch.

Player B and D won't move in the sequence so don't forget about them. Change them up once in a while. I found using my strikers and center mids there to work on their ability to play wall passes through the middle of the pitch was quite effective but obvioussly anyone can go there and should go there.

Coaching Points:

Proper foot to pass with (pretend the defender is the cone)

Wall pass players check away and to, check shoulder, fix shape, receive half turn and lay a nice set pass

Once the player starts the sequence, they should take a step to the side to suck the defender in the direction to the get around the corner for the return pass

The long pass needs to be with the right foot since we're passing that way and to the right of the cone for the receiving player to avoid the defender (the cone)

The receiving player fo the logn pass should check away and to etc. as always and use their left foot to play the ball in for the overlapping run

The pass back from the overlapper needs to be to the near foot to help protect the ball from the defender.

Lots of details in this quick moving drill. Great to get the kids moving and have their details challenged.

Passing under pressure (20 mins)

Passing under pressure

Set Up

10 x 10 grid with manequins or cones set in the middle with 3 players behind each manequin.

Coach feeds the ball to a player and the player opposite him puts pressure on the ball. The player receiving the ball passes to one side of him and then moves to the opposite side. This sequence then continues. The player putting pressure on the ball fills the back of the cue that he runs to.

Details

Good first touch

Eye contact with who you pass to

Recognize what side the defender pressures and pass to the opposite

Player not receiving the ball should recognize that means he is pressing and get going early.

4 Goal Game (20 mins)

4 Goal Game

Simple possession game with 2 teams in a grid of appropriate size. 4 goals are put in the 4 corners of the grid. The goal is to make X number of passes and then score on any of the goals. This will work on the players ability to identify a tight space and switch the field.

Adjust space to the age, skil and number of players you have. Other conditions could be number of touches and obvioussly the number of passes needed before you can attack a goal.
