What - Improve building out from our half when opponent is pressing high.

Who - Goalkeeper playing into central midfielder to initiate attack.

When - Our goal kicks, and whenever we have a restart of possession in our half.

Where - Inside our own half, looking to penetrate through the center as first option.

Intro (5 mins)

Organization:

  • Set up as shown above.
  • Players will set up size of rondo square on their own upon arrival.
  • 4v2 or 3v1 depending on numbers.

Instructions:

  • Red players have to string together 5 passes for 1 point.
  • Blue player has to win possession off reds for 1 point. Rotate out for red player who lost ball.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Pressure and effort from defenders in the middle.
  • Communication between 2 defenders.
  • Body shape of pressing defender (show to the left or right).

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: If defenders win ball, try to get out of square for 2 points.

Main Activity (25 mins)

Organization:

  • 20x30 as shown above.
  • 3 teams of 4 players.
  • 4 minute rounds.

Instructions:

  • Red team has to connect 3 passes and then play across to other red team for 1 point.
  • Soon as they've played across, they then become the defending team. Blue team goes in to bottom zone.
  • If defending team ever wins the ball, game becomes 4v4 going towards goal. Goal counts as 2 points.
  • If red team wins ball back after losing it to blues, they can play right across to other side.
  • Switch must be on the ground.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Which direction should we try to show opponent on the ball soon as its played in? (Inside towards our defending teammates)
  • What angle run and body shape should we take when pressing the opponent on the ball? (Curved run that closes off the wide channel first).
  • Where should the defending players in the middle zone position themselves once pass towards the inside is played? (Ready to cover, one comes closer in towards the ball, other one a bit deeper for balance)

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Switch can be in the air.
  • P: Remove # of passes. Soon as ball is played in red team can get across whenever.
  • R: 5 passes for passing teams before they can play across.

Conditioned Game (30 mins)

Organization:

  • 25x35 as shown above.
  • 2 teams of 6 or even teams
  • 5 minute rounds.

Instructions:

  • Ball always starts from goalkeeper. From any out.
  • Red team has to try to score in one of 3 small goals.
  • If blue team wins ball and score, it is 1 point.
  • If blue team win ball in opponent's half and score it is 2 points.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Which direction should we try to show opponent on the ball soon as its played in? (Inside towards our defending teammates)
  • What angle run and body shape should we take when pressing the opponent on the ball? (Curved run that closes off the wide channel first).
  • Where should the defending players in the middle zone position themselves once pass towards the inside is played? (Ready to cover, one comes closer in towards the ball, other one a bit deeper for balance)
  • If we trap opponent can we be aggressive in try to steal the ball.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Add numbers to red team, make it 7v5 to make it more difficult for red team.
