Part 1 (20 mins)

1 v 1, 2 v 1 Concept

Conditions-

- Stop ball in end zone to win. 3 different practices.

- Defenders are challenged to win the ball back within 5 seconds. (This is the behaviour of our football club)

1.) Two players- Defender passes the ball across for the attacker to receive. Attacker must try and beat the defender and dribble into the end zone and stop the ball dead. Two concepts. Drive at pace and put the defender on the backfoot or pause in possession to free up space behind the defender.

2.) Three players- Defender starts just outside the end zone. First attacker starts opposite. Second attacker starts in the end zone. Defender and opposite attacker pass the ball back and forth. At any given moment the attacker in the end zone must drop into the main playing area and look to receive the ball. The objective for this attacker is to now secure the ball and to find away to wriggle away from the defender and break into the end zone like before.

3.) Three players- Same as (2) except this time once the first attacker plays the ball into the attacker who receives he can join in and make it a 2 v 1.

Progression-

- Paint different pictures. Midfielder playing into a forward. Defender playing into a midfielder. Changing these pictures changes the rules of the game. If for example it is the midfielder receiving from a defender then this allows players to receive the ball behind the defender. If it is an attacker receiving from a midfielder then this of course introduces offsides and means the focus is now on the timing of runs.

- Include transition for the defender.

Part 2 (25 mins)

Combination- Long, Short, Long, Repeat

Simple unopposed combination working on body orientation, weight of pass, awareness and movement off the ball.

Half the players on the outside have a ball and half are without. One of the two players in the middle move and offer a good supporting angle to receive the ball. Ideally he will go away from the ball and allow his teammate to offer a supporting position in a deeper position. This should allow players to play one touch. The second receiving player in the middle must then on the next pass be the first receiving player on a different ball so should look to make a sharp movement away and this should be the trigger for his teammate to offer another supporting position. All players will for at least a minute and a half in the middle.

Progression-

- Add a passive defender.

- Add a live defender.

Part 3 (30 mins)

Phase of Play

Pitch is split so we are working in the final two thirds. Ball will start with the attacking team whenever the ball goes out of play. The only way the defending team can go and attack is if they win the ball cleanly. The attacking team setup in with two Wing Backs, two Central Midfielders and a Forward. They also have a server who will then play as  goalkeeper if the defensive team can work a transition. The Defending team setup with a back four and two Central Midfielders. They will be tasked to defend in a man marking system.

The objective for the attacking team is to work the ball into the final third looking at the concepts we looked at earlier in the session.

Progression-

- Allow attacking team to use the Goalkeeper as an extra attacker.
