Set up two lines approximately 12 yards apart. in the middle of these lines have two gates of different colours 2 yards wide as shown in the picture.
One player from each line runs into the middle and run on the spot (players should be pumping the arms to work on proper running technique), the coach then calls out a colour and the players race thru that color gate. When the coach calls out the color the next two players shoul make their way to the middle. You ca add activities for the players to do when they are in the middle (header, touch the ground, turn etc)
For an extra progression you can make it that if the coach yells 'blue' the players go to yellow and if he coach yells 'yellow' the players go to blue.

Create two equally sized boxes and split your players evenly into these boxes these boxes need to share a middle line as shown in the diagram. If the red team have the ball, two blue defenders go across to the red side of the field and try to win the ball.
If they win the ball they have to try and pass back to their half of the field. Then the same thing happens on the other side, the blues try and keep the ball away from the two red defenders and the red defenders try and steal the ball.
Count how many passes each team does, who can do the most passes?
If you are waiting for your team to win the ball back can we be ready? Do not stand near the center and watch, be in a good position to receive the ball.

Now a cone goal has been added into the middle line. Instead of two defenders going across, three players go across and one player plays in goal. The attacking team have to complete three or four passes before they can take a shot on goal.
If the defenders win the ball they play to their teammates on the other side of the goal and the roles are reversed.
Can defenders call not only that they are going across but their role (1st defender, 2nd defender, goalkeeper)?
Can we make quick passes and get a shot away before defenders are ready?
