Specific / Final Third / Out of possession

Welsh way Specific Final Third

Out Possession

Understand how and when to minimise space, deal and stop crosses / shots and protect the middle in the defensive third.

Organisation / Area Size

Area size is 50m x 44 (2 x 18 yard boxes) with a 14 m shaded area in the middle

7 v 7 , Red team will play with a back 3, 2 x C/M and 1 x Striker.

And the Blue will set up with a back 2, 1 x C/M, 2 x wide players and 1 x Strikers.

Designated area for footballs behind the goals

Session Details

Start from the Blue goalkeeper will act as feeder, rolls the ball to one of the C/B who feeds one of the wide players who drives in to the final third to deliver a cross. Offside rule applies. Encourage the Blue team to attack from different positions working on different angles of delivery so the defenders are challenged from multiple directions which give me plenty of opportunity to coach my team. To begin with the wide Blue players can drop in to anywhere within their wide channels Red players have to stay in their Zone, until the wide Blue players enters the final third.

For this session I will be working with the RED team out of possession if we win the ball we can score 2 goals by passing the ball in to the Blue Goalkeepers arms with in a managed count down. 1 x goals if they score in either mini goals

4 x 2 min Blocks with Terminal feedback in between.

Challenge, conditions & Targets

1. Extra points for a combination with central player

2. The strikers can drop in to the shaded area creating a 4 v 2

3. 2 points from a header or first time finish.

4. Opposite wide player joins in to attack the far post.

5. Central C/M can enter the final third and attack the edge of the box.

6. 3 goals if the Blues score from a switch between wide players

Key points

Out of possession

1. Defend narrow

2. Protect the middle

3. Leave the furthest player

4. Block the passing lanes

5. Block the shot / cross

6. Force direction of play

In possession

1. Find the spare player

2. Exploit the numerical advantage

First 2 min block with players locked in to their positions which encourages them to play wide and get the cross in. Closest Full backs to close down quickly force them down the line and away from goal, stop the cross the C/B should move across and act as cover if the fullback gets beaten. Opposite fullback should be as far as the penalty spot.

Second 2 min block Blue C/B can enter the wide channels creating a 2 v 1 against the full back creating different angle for the cross from the bye line or from a pull back. Once in the attacking third the Blue C/M can enter to try and score. If the Blues play the overlap (Decision) does the CB engage with the overlapping runner or stay in his front post position all dependant on where the ball has been played in to corner flag or can the runner take a touch and get in to the box.

Third 2 min block Encourage the BLUE team that they get extra points by combining through the middle. To counter this the back 3 will be within the 18 yard box and the distance between the defensive units and the midfield should be limited making the space compact and difficult to play through. If the CF drops in to midfield (Decision) does he follow or stick to his position. Communication must be good between the units.

Fourth 2 min block The BLUE team will score more points from a switch from wide player to wide player before scoring. RED Striker angles his run so they can't switch to the other C/B forcing the direction of play. Pressing only happens when triggers apply bad pass, backwards pass bad first touch. If the player goes to press the rest of the unit narrows. Backwards pass then the team can push up playing a high line.

For this session I will be working with the RED team out of possession if we have possession of the ball they will be managed either by time limit to score, or limited touches as I want to be coaching them out of possession.

3. C/M block the bounce pass

4. Striker to angle his run so they can't switch to the other C/B forcing the direction of play

5. Force them back

6. Open body position when dealing with crosses.

Blue attacking team will very their attacks so it creates problems for the defensive teams

1. 2 v 1 our wide, does the F/B stick with the runner or close down the ball carrier (Trigger points)

2. Can the strikers make runs in between the back three. Communication will be essential to deal with this

3. When the ball goes backwards can we play high and not drop to much be aggressive. (Goalkeeper must be higher up also)

4. When striker drops in to midfield does the C/B go with him and what effect that would have on the F/B

5. If we win the ball in defence and one of the back 3 carries it up field make sure that one of the C/M takes his place.

6. If the striker drops in to midfield can the Blue CM make a run from deep to get beyond the back 3.
