Repetition of Finishing (10 mins)

Set UpUse an area approximately 20*20 as shown in diagram with one goal on each end line off set from center. There should be a goalkeeper in each goal. 

Each player has a ball. One at a time is finishing on either goal. carry the ball at cone, beat it with a move and finish. Players shoot then rotate to other line. next player begins dribbling when shot is scored, saved, or missed.  

Coaching Points:

  • dribble at pace, beat defender (cone in this activity) at angle to set up shot
  • strike with laces, plant foot pointed at target, ankle locked, body over ball, and follow through (not stopping foot on contact)
  • Encourage players to use different moves to get by the cone (stab push, scissors etc)
  • advanced: which part of goal is open?

1v1 Goal Competition (15 mins)

Set Up: Play 1v1 to goal using the same area from the previous activity with a dividing line down the middle to create 2 playing areas. Split players into two teams and have them play 1v1, attacking team player starts with the ball and dribbles at defender and tries to score as quickly as possible. The defender starts at the cone in the middle of the grid, defender scores by dribbling across opposition end line. 

Next group goes once the ball goes out of play. 

Coaching Points:

  • Attack defender on the dribble at speed and use move to help create space for shot 
  • Important for attacker to recognize that they do not need to dribble past player to score just create enough space
  • Contact ball with laces (otherwise known as 2nd knuckle) you can show equivalent on hand
  • Strike ball with ankle locked (flex your ankle muscles). not a wobbly foot 
  • Plant foot/hips pointed at target 
  • Follow through 
  • Standing leg knee is slightly bent and torso is leaning slightly forward

Success Criteria:

  • Attacker prepares ball to be able to shoot (not shooting with ball directly underneath us/stuck between our feet)
  • shots are with laces, towards goal, and central ball contact is made. (backspin=loose ankle)
  • players achieve a high level of repetition in a short amount of time

2v2 Lightning (20 mins)

Set Up: Use an area 20*20. Each team sets up at one end of the field in two lines (off the field). the first two players from each line play making a 2v2 game to large goals + goalkeepers. Put a cone line down the middle, teams are restricted to their own half. Rotate your Goalkeepers.

reinforce shooting technique (toe down, ankle locked, strike middle of ball with laces) .

Instructions:

1. goalkeeper introduces ball to his team, and they have 5 seconds to get a shot off (dictate vocally with a countdown to start, then let teams count each other down once they've got it)

2. defending team can pressure/cover on THEIR HALF ONLY. they can block shots to help the goalkeeper

3. teams that get scored on: exit the game & get back in line. teams that score: get a new ball & 5 seconds countdown to shoot.

4. if the ball goes out after a marathon sequence, get 6 new players on and pick a team to put a ball on

Coaching Points:

1. laces for power 

2. toe down (ankle locked)

3. strike the middle of the ball

4. follow through towards target (advanced: jump & land on striking foot during follow through)

Success Criteria:

1. players are getting repetition of striking technique with proper technique

2. shots are being taken quickly from open spaces of the field

Scrimmage 7v7 (20 mins)

Scrimmage 7v7.

The main focus will still be on improving the technical application of passing and receiving in a game setting. We will also need to encourage movement to get open.

Coaching Points:

  • What surface of your foot helps you play the most accurate pass? Inside
  • How do you get open for a teammate? Move to a space where there is no defender between you and the ball
  • How do you find open teammates? Dribbling with head up to and looking at both teammates and where the defenders are positioned
  • How can you receive the ball to see more of the field?Across body, opening hips to face the direction you want to play after receiving ball
  • When is a good time to shoot? Whenever you are close enough to the goal and have enough space to get a shot away
  • What surface of the foot do you use to shoot most of the time? Laces, with ankle locked and following through to generate power
