Circle game (10 mins)

AIM OF THE SESSION IS TO ENCOURAGE DRIBBLING AND CHANGE OF DIRECTION

Set up

Circle with multiple coloured cones

Organisation

Players sit next to their chosen colours on arrival, when coaches shout a colour the kids sitting next to this colour stand up run around the circle, first one to arrive to his cone wins.

Warm up (10 mins)

Set Up

  • 30 Flat marker placed around the pitch
  • Each player has a ball and stands next to a flat marker
Drill

  • Ball Mastery
  • Toe taps

Technical (without the ball) (10 mins)

Set Up

  • Area size 2 x 25x20
  • Players stand facing each other in pairs, 6 yards apart
  • In each pair, 1 player wears a red bib and the other wears a blue bib
  • In-between them are placed 4 x different coloured cones

Drill

  • The players start by bouncing on their toes, waiting for a colour to be shouted out by the coach
  • If the coach shouts red, the players sprint out and place their foot by the cone and then immediately retreat back to their white spot and back to bouncing on their toes
  • This is continued with many colours called out
  • The aim is to get out to the cone quicker than your partner

Set Up

  • Players stand facing each other in pairs, 6 yards apart with a ball each
  • In each pair, 1 player wears a red bib and the other wears a blue bib
  • In-between them are placed 4 x different coloured cones

Drill

  • The players start by bouncing on their toes, waiting for a colour to be shouted out by the coach
  • If the coach shouts red, the players dribble out with the ball and perform a turn at the selected cone before returning to their white spot 
  • The turn can be a drag back, cruyff, chop, etc
  • This is continued with many colours called out
  • The aim is to get out to the cone a d return to the start, quicker than your partner

Progression

  • This time the reds take control and decide which cone out of the end red/green cones, they are going to drive towards
  • The blues have to copy their movement and try to get to the cone quicker than their opponent
  • Encourage the drop of a shoulder, change of direction, etc
  • After 2 minutes, swap so that the blues are the ones making the decision and the red are copying their movements
Regression

  • Remove the competitive nature of the drill and concentrate on the technicality of the turn

Dribbling (10 mins)

Set up

  • Coach lies down in the middle of the pitch with a variety of cones spread around them

Drill

  • The players are on the outside of the pitch, each with a ball
  • They must dribble with the ball close to their feet, creeping up on the coach, trying to steal his cones
  • If the coach wakes, the players must freeze
  • The aim is for the players to try and steal all the cones and dribble them back to the outside of the area
  • The drill continues until all cones are removed
