Description:

*Starting player must start touching their net, second player must be at the back, closest to the netting (enough room for player to run around their net)

*Players will run on go to collect a ball at the end of their field (one at a time), after collecting their ball they must bring it back and run around their net before putting it in their goal

1v1 Pressure from side (body manipulation) (10 mins)

Organization:

*set up 5 yard columns approximately 12 yards in length

*defenders start on left side (side of the goals) and attackers on right

*place 2 cones 1 yard in from end line on defenders side

Description:

*start without ball first, attacker looks to use speed & cuts to beat defender

*attacker starts activity by moving first, attacker must run across line #1 or #2 before defender gets foot on the blue cone

*Must get to cones at halfway before cutting back through line #2

*Cannot cross over into other channels

Coaching points:

*attacker starts with speed to get defender moving (use momentum against them)

*Attackers decision based on defenders position:

   - Defender behind = attack space in front (cut across defender in game situation)

   - Defender ahead = TURN & attack space behind

   - Defender alongside = unbalance

            *more space behind = turn

            *more space ahead = stop-start

Add ball & now attacker is looking to score on either pug net or between the poles. Scoring on pug net acts like beating the defender on the wing and delivering cross into the box. Scoring on the poles would act like a recycle of play through full back, centre back CDM etc.

Option to make the pug net worth 2 points and poles worth 1 (value beating the defender to deliver a cross).

With ball - players are looking to utilize turns & stop start skills to unbalance:

  • Cruyff turn
  • Outside cut / inside cut
  • Stepover turn
  • Stop-start
  • Pull push

Make it a competition! Winners move up, losers move down (1v1 World Cup).

Coaching points:

*attacker starts with speed to get defender moving (use momentum against them)

*Attackers decision based on defenders position:

   - Defender behind = attack space in front (cut across defender in game situation)

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Crossbar challenge

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Crossbar challenge
Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Crossbar challenge

Crossbar challenge (5 mins)

Organization:

*Split players into two teams

*Choose a distance for players to strike the ball towards their net (just in front of half, between 2 pillars)

*Ensure players are maintaining 3m distance

Description:

*Each team tries to strike the ball and hit the crossbar

*Players on each team alternate, but both teams can shoot at same time

*First to 5 crossbars wins!

If players are struggling with this, add in the ability to hit the posts (must be in air, can only bounce once, etc. based on ability)

Focus on coaching points to help play a lofted ball:

  • contact point is underneath the ball with that second knuckle
  • Leaning back to help get underneath the ball
  • Angle of approach - can't be straight behind ball, don't want to be at an extreme angle either (allow foot to get underneath ball with more of an angle)
  • Not about how hard or fast you swing your foot - about the striking technique!
You will notice some players may have a lot of spin on their ball. They may be striking the ball with the inside of their foot, and on the outside of the ball - causing it to spin. Remind them to contact the back of the ball, on the lower half.
